In 1896, seven young Koreans recorded a song called “Arirang” on a phonograph in Washington, D.C. The melody, carrying the grief and endurance of a people, traveled across oceans as an unfamiliar voice from the margins.
One hundred and thirty years later, another group of seven stands at the center of global pop. BTS is preparing to bring “Arirang” back to the world, this time not as a relic of history but as the centerpiece of a new musical narrative.
The animation teaser released on March 13 visualizes this symbolic journey. It begins with the seven youths of 1896 boarding a ship to carry their song across the Pacific, before shifting to the present day where BTS performs beneath a sea of purple lights and ultimately stands at Gwanghwamun Square.
The imagery reframes a once peripheral folk melody as a declaration of cultural agency. What was once a distant echo now returns as a statement that Korean music can stand at the heart of the global pop landscape.
BTS will release their fifth full-length album “ARIRANG” on March 20. The following day, the group will hold “BTS THE COMEBACK LIVE | ARIRANG” at Gwanghwamun Square in Seoul, with the event broadcast worldwide through Netflix.
The scale of the project extends beyond music itself. A global campaign asking “WHAT IS YOUR LOVE SONG?” has appeared in cities including New York, London and Seoul, hinting at the album’s broader concept.
By redefining “Arirang” as a universal love song, the campaign suggests a shift from the historical emotion of sorrow to a message of solidarity and humanity. In this framework, the album’s title track “SWIM” symbolizes resilience, the determination to keep moving forward even amid life’s strongest tides.
Offline experiences will further expand the narrative. Beginning March 20, the “BTS POP-UP : ARIRANG” store will open at HYBE headquarters and Shinsegae Department Store in Seoul, offering fans a physical space to explore the album’s themes and Korean aesthetics.
The highlight arrives on March 21 at Gwanghwamun Square, where the comeback live broadcast will transform the symbolic ending of the teaser into reality. Through global streaming, the moment will connect BTS and their worldwide fandom ARMY in a shared cultural experience.
From a phonograph recording in 1896 to a global live broadcast in 2026, the journey of “Arirang” spans more than a century. The question now is how this new version of the song, sung together by BTS and ARMY, will resonate with audiences around the world.
