Lee Sung-kyung and Chae Jong-hyeop ultimately faced an unexpected separation.
Episode 5 of the MBC Friday-Saturday drama In Your Radiant Season presented a sudden turning point in the relationship between Song Ha-ran (Lee Sung-kyung) and Sun Woo-chan (Chae Jong-hyeop). Although the two had resolved to protect each other’s happiness, the episode closed with an abrupt farewell that left viewers emotional.
In the episode, Sun Woo-chan proposed that he and Song Ha-ran try being “three-month trial neighborhood friends.” However, before the trial period could be completed, Woo-chan returned to the United States, forcing the pair to spend time apart.
Arriving in Gyeongju, Song Ha-ran began a field trip with Woo-chan and gradually learned “how to live joyfully.” Walks through nature and shared excursions with the team revealed a different side of Ha-ran. The cinematography captured autumn landscapes, rustling grass in the wind, and warm natural scenery that deepened the emotional tone of the episode. Ha-ran, who had previously kept her distance from others, slowly began opening up to her colleagues, showing how her time with Woo-chan had changed her.
During the trip, a sudden downpour heightened tension between the two. When Ha-ran went to retrieve a scarf and lost contact, Woo-chan rushed into the mountains to search for her. Their reunion allowed them to look more closely at each other’s feelings. Ha-ran carefully asked about Woo-chan’s childhood and past wounds, but he hesitated to answer, fearing that revealing his history might hurt her. While Ha-ran tried to step closer, Woo-chan’s guarded heart left viewers with a lingering sense of sadness.
Woo-chan also experienced recurring tinnitus and visual disturbances during the trip, triggering fragmented memories from Boston connected to the incident known as “One Inch.” Images of shattered glass, drops of blood, and metallic sounds flashed through his mind. The voice of Kang Hyuk-chan (Kwon Do-hyung) echoed in his memory, and Woo-chan eventually broke down in tears. The appearance of Cha Soo-jin (Lee Joo-yeon) introduced new clues about the hidden incident, heightening the tension of the unfolding story.
Meanwhile, Ha-ran decided not to forcefully dig into Woo-chan’s past. Rather than confirming the truth, she realized that protecting someone’s happiness could also be a form of love. Her choice to stand beside another person’s pain instead of running away from it captured the emotional core of the drama.
After the trip concluded, Woo-chan remained in Gyeongju while Ha-ran returned to Seoul first. Before parting, Woo-chan handed her a disposable camera and asked her to take one photo each day to record happy moments. The two promised to meet again in Seoul ten days later, when the full moon rises, marking a brief but meaningful farewell. Looking through the camera, Ha-ran discovered photos Woo-chan had secretly taken of their memories in Gyeongju and recalled his words, “Live joyfully. Even if I’m not there later,” bringing her to tears.
The episode also revealed changes in the relationships surrounding the Nana House residents. Kim Nana (Lee Mi-sook) and Park Man-jae (Kang Seok-woo) revisited old memories while listening to the LP “La Vie en Rose,” recalling their time in Chuncheon. Meanwhile, subtle sparks appeared between Song Ha-young (Han Ji-hyun) and Yeon Tae-seok (Kwon Hyuk) after their elevator encounter, and it was revealed that their connection to the Nana family dates back 15 years. Tension also emerged between Song Ha-dam (Oh Ye-ju) and Cha Yu-gyeom (Kim Tae-young), hinting at future developments.
In the closing moments of the episode, Woo-chan suddenly departed for the United States, leaving Ha-ran facing an unexpected farewell. The memories she later discovered in the photographs from Gyeongju suggested that their connection may continue, leaving viewers with a lingering emotional resonance.
