Son Seung-yeon emerged as the first trophy winner on “The Number Ones” with a daring and commanding performance.
In Episode 3, which aired on March 1, contestants faced off in the high-stakes “Head-to-Head Match” for a ticket to the final “Last Stand” round and the program’s first championship trophy. At the center of the night was Son. She took an unexpected gamble by selecting “Bad News” by girl group KISS OF LIFE, delivering a stage that seamlessly blended rap and powerhouse vocals, instantly shifting the atmosphere in the studio.
Her first opponent was Lee Ye-jun, winner of The Voice of Korea Season 2, setting up a highly anticipated battle between two audition-born vocalists. Son chose Ahn Ye-eun’s “Sangsahwa,” leading the performance with emotional depth and technical precision.
Watching the showdown, Lee Min-jung remarked, “It felt like a world-conquering battle between a monster and AI,” expressing her amazement. After a close contest, Son advanced to the next round, maintaining her momentum.
The mood shifted dramatically in the following stage. Reinterpreting “Bad News” in her own style, Son single-handedly performed parts originally divided among four members. Moving fluidly between rap and rock-style shouting, she ignited the venue, drawing a spontaneous standing ovation from the audience.
As soon as the stage ended, both cast members and spectators erupted into applause. Even her rivals praised her, saying, “Tonight, you can take it all.” Huh Gak joked, “Every time I watch Son Seung-yeon, it’s frustrating. She’s just too good,” drawing laughter.
Ultimately, Son defeated Huh Gak and Kim Ki-tae in succession, becoming the final winner of the “Head-to-Head Match.” She secured both the program’s first trophy and a spot in the “Last Stand” round.
Holding the trophy, Son shared, “The moment I saw this gold line, I was reminded of how I felt winning an audition 14 years ago,” revealing her overwhelming emotions.
The broadcast also revealed that the number of trophies earned will play a crucial role in the upcoming “Last Stand,” intensifying competition among the contestants. Kim Ki-tae expressed his regret, saying, “I really want that trophy,” while others hinted at a fierce comeback in the next round.
The episode closed with a teaser announcing the arrival of a new “wild card singer,” heightening anticipation for the next broadcast.
