Actress Keum Sae-rok continues to solidify her presence through relentless challenges, from winning gold at a national amateur boxing competition to stepping onto her first theatrical stage.
In March, Keum will appear in the play “The French Safe: Who Will Climb the North Wall,” marking her first theater performance since her 2015 debut. The work unfolds under the premise that “the safe can be opened when all electricity shuts off at midnight,” bringing together characters with different motives and backstories inside a secluded underground bank vault. Directed by Jang Jin, who returns with a new project after 10 years, the production features a powerhouse cast including Shin Goo, Sung Ji-ru, Jang Hyun-sung, Kim Han-gyeol, Jung Young-joo, Jang Young-nam, Choi Young-joon, Joo Jong-hyuk, Kim Seul-gi, Jo Dal-hwan and Ahn Doo-ho.
Keum takes on the role of a “bank employee,” the character who knows the bank better than anyone else, signaling a new transformation in her career. On a stage where she will engage directly with the audience, she is expected to deliver heightened emotional depth and vivid live performance energy.
At the production press conference held on the 10th in Daehangno, Seoul, Keum shared her determination, saying, “Although it is my first time challenging myself with a play, I wanted to do it without fear,” adding, “Since audiences spend their precious time and money to come see us, I will practice hard so it will never feel wasted.”
Keum is currently meeting global viewers through the Disney+ original series “Bloody Flower.” As the strong-willed prosecutor Cha I-yeon, she anchors the narrative with authority, layering cold investigative precision, unwavering belief in justice and subtle inner fractures to build a multidimensional character.
She is also making her mark in variety programming. As an MC on ENA’s dating reality show “Dear My X,” she carefully reads contestants’ emotions. Her measured reactions and well-timed commentary, rooted in her observational skills as an actress, bring stability and balance to the program.
Through her personal YouTube channel “Keum Sae-rok Film,” she shares slices of daily life, revealing a side distinct from her on-screen persona. With calm narration and refined visuals, she presents a more intimate and human charm.
Last year, she took on boxing in the variety show “Iron Girls 2,” ultimately winning a gold medal at a national amateur competition through persistence and tireless effort. It is this bold expansion of her artistic territory that continues to draw attention to her evolving career.
Keum Sae-rok’s first stage play “The French Safe: Who Will Climb the North Wall” will run from March 7 to May 31 at NOL Seokyeong Square Scon Hall 1 in Jongno-gu, Seoul.
