A surprise contender in the New Year box office, Choir of God, is writing its own “box office legend.”
According to the Korean Film Council’s integrated box office tracking system on January 30, Choir of God surpassed a cumulative audience total of 800,000 admissions as of that day. Since its release on December 31, the film has continued a remarkable upward trajectory, achieving this milestone in its fifth week in theaters.
The film’s box office run has unfolded like a drama in itself. Upon release, Choir of God struggled to secure screens amid fierce competition from Hollywood blockbusters such as Avatar: Fire and Ash and Zootopia 2. Yet driven solely by the strength of the film and positive word of mouth from audiences, it managed to overturn expectations. Opening at No. 5, the film climbed steadily to No. 2 at the box office, maintaining one of the highest seat occupancy rates even in its fifth week, a clear testament to its staying power.
The driving force behind the 800,000 milestone has undoubtedly been audiences themselves. Captivated by the film’s humor, emotional resonance, and message of comfort, viewers have returned for repeat viewings, becoming its most reliable supporters. In particular, the surge of sing-along screenings, which transformed theaters into concert-like venues, has evolved into a full-fledged cultural phenomenon, serving as a key catalyst for the film’s long-term success. Megabox is currently hosting sing-along screening events nationwide.
Now, Choir of God has its sights set on the one-million mark. Despite starting with a significant disadvantage in screen count compared to competing titles, the film has demonstrated the essence of “efficient box office success,” making the milestone of one million admissions appear increasingly within reach.
From a story that began as a fabrication to one that became undeniably real, Choir of God has captured the hearts of audiences across generations. Attention is now focused on just how far this box office journey will go.
Meanwhile, in its fifth week, cast members of Choir of God are scheduled to greet audiences during weekend stage greetings at Lotte Cinema World Tower, Megabox Guro East Pole, CGV Starfield City Wirye, CGV Yatap, CGV Ori, and Lotte Cinema Suji.
