According to U.S. IT media outlet The Information, Nvidia is considering a substantial investment of up to $30 billion (around ₩43 trillion), while Microsoft is contemplating a commitment of less than $10 billion (around ₩14 trillion). Amazon's potential investment is reported to exceed $10 billion, with possibilities reaching over $20 billion, contingent on expanding its existing agreements with OpenAI.
The discussions among these tech giants come in the wake of OpenAI's strategic partnership with Microsoft last year, which resulted in the formation of 'OpenAI Group PBC.' This entity, controlled by the non-profit 'OpenAI Foundation,' balances profit generation with public interest initiatives. Microsoft currently holds a 27% stake in this group.
Nvidia, which has already expressed interest in investing up to $100 billion in OpenAI through a Letter of Intent, aims to collaborate on building a 10-gigawatt data center powered by its chips. In contrast, Amazon has yet to make a direct investment in OpenAI, but is exploring options to leverage OpenAI's products, such as ChatGPT, for enterprise applications.
These negotiations are crucial as OpenAI seeks to secure $100 billion in funding to advance its AI capabilities. SoftBank is reportedly nearing a $30 billion investment in this fundraising round. The Financial Times corroborates these reports, suggesting that the combined investment from Nvidia, Microsoft, and Amazon could amount to approximately $40 billion (around ₩57 trillion).
