Balming Tiger, known for its eccentric identity, otherworldly imagination, and genre-defying music, takes center stage on EBS’s “Space Gonggam” Pioneer Series Episode 9. The group invites viewers into its creative universe on January 16, presenting the artistic vision shaped by 11 multidisciplinary artists who freely cross the boundaries between music, visuals, and performance.
Composed of singers, rappers, producers, and visual directors, Balming Tiger has established its own definition of “alternative K-POP,” refusing to be confined to a single genre. Leader San Yawn explained that the group was envisioned as a playground where members could genuinely enjoy creating together, which eventually led to the birth of the concept of alternative K-POP.
Balming Tiger gained international recognition through its collaboration with BTS’s RM on “SEXY NUKIM,” which topped Billboard’s World Digital Song Sales chart. In 2023, the group became the first Asian act to receive the SXSW Grulke Prize at South by Southwest, earning acclaim for its originality and creative performance style. In 2024, The New York Times introduced Balming Tiger as a leading global alternative K-POP collective, solidifying its position on the international stage.
The broadcast closely documents the group’s formation process and how its members integrate music, visuals, and performance into a unified artistic worldview. “Space Gonggam” followed Balming Tiger’s creative journey for six months, capturing their experimentation, collaboration, and artistic philosophy.
Each member draws inspiration in a different way. Bj Wonjin starts his day with swimming, while Omega Sapien walks barefoot on clay paths to spark ideas. Mudd the Student, Unsinkable, and Lee Suho engage in intense brainstorming sessions in the studio. Only about one percent of these ideas are eventually selected, a process that highlights the group’s rigorous creative standards and dedication.
Balming Tiger’s performances are known for being bold and unpredictable. At their solo concert in Seoul in June 2025, cinematic direction, live band arrangements, and performance art were fused into a single immersive experience. The group also collaborated with actors Park Jung-min, Shim Eun-kyung, and Baek Hyun-jin, expanding its creative language through experimental acting and stage expression. Their global presence has continued to grow with appearances at the Fuji Rock Festival in Japan, as well as solo concerts in London and Hong Kong.
The program features live performances of their representative tracks including “UP!,” “Buriburi,” and “Trust Yourself,” showcasing the group’s collective production style and strong individual identities. Their signature bright energy and playful creativity are fully reflected in these stages.
Balming Tiger’s episode of EBS “Space Gonggam” Pioneer Series airs on January 16 at midnight on EBS1.
