[News Culture] After seven episodes of pretending, 'Spooky in Love' finally let its central couple stop acting.
Episode 8, aired Aug. 9, turned Cheon Yeo-ri (Park Eun-bin) and Ma Kang-uk (Yang Se-jong) into a real couple, complete with a proposal, an engagement ceremony and a kiss. Getting there, however, was anything but smooth.
Yeo-ri first raised the possibility of an engagement while dealing with pressure from her family. She expected Kang-uk to hesitate. Instead, he made clear that while their relationship may have begun as a cover, his feelings were never part of the act.
Kang-uk then set out to propose properly. The families met, plans were made and the ring was ready. When the moment arrived, nerves got the better of him. He reached for the wrong case and presented Yeo-ri with an acupuncture kit instead.
The mix-up gave the romance a comic payoff before the episode shifted into more anxious territory.
Kang-uk vanished on the day of the engagement ceremony, leaving Yeo-ri fearing that something had happened to him. Kang Min-hwan (Ong Seong-wu) only made matters worse by bringing up the past at exactly the wrong moment.
Kang-uk eventually appeared, but Yeo-ri was done waiting for him to lead the moment. Fighting back tears, she handed him the ring herself. Their kiss sealed an engagement that no longer needed an audience or a cover story.
The episode saved its biggest complication for after the romantic payoff.
The heart Kang-uk received in his transplant once belonged to Kang Ji-hwan (Kim Min-chul), Min-hwan’s younger brother and one of Yeo-ri’s friends. The revelation makes Kang-uk’s connection to both Yeo-ri and Min-hwan far more personal than either had realized.
It also brings the romance directly into the unresolved boat accident, with long-buried details beginning to surface just as Yeo-ri and Kang-uk have committed to each other.
Episode 8 averaged 6.2 percent nationwide and peaked at 6.5 percent. In the Seoul metropolitan area, it averaged 6.2 percent and reached a high of 6.7 percent. The drama led its time slot among cable and general programming channels, topped the key 20-to-49 demographic and set a new series high.
