[News Culture] Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ has wasted little time becoming one of Korea’s biggest summer draws.

The epic pulled in 1,333,568 moviegoers from Friday through Sunday, leading the weekend box office and carrying that momentum past the 2 million-admission mark early Monday. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ remained close behind and is now on the verge of reaching 6 million.

According to the Korean Film Council, ‘The Odyssey’ drew 497,580 admissions on Sunday alone, bringing its total through the end of the weekend to 1,874,865. By 6 a.m. Monday, the film had officially crossed 2 million admissions, just six days after its release.

That pace puts Nolan’s latest well ahead of some of Korea’s biggest recent theatrical hits. It reached 2 million six days faster than ‘The King Who Lived,’ currently the year’s top-grossing film with 16.9 million admissions, and one day faster than ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash,’ which finished its run with 6.74 million. Nolan’s own ‘Oppenheimer’ also needed six more days to reach the same milestone.

Demand has been particularly strong even with fewer screens than ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day.’ ‘The Odyssey’ posted the highest seat occupancy rate among films in theaters Sunday at 72.1 percent.

Based on Homer’s ancient Greek epic, the film follows Odysseus on his perilous voyage home after the Trojan War. Nolan wrote, directed and produced the film, with Matt Damon leading an ensemble cast that includes Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson and Charlize Theron.

‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ was hardly overshadowed. The superhero blockbuster drew 463,935 admissions Sunday and 1,264,783 over the three-day weekend, pushing its cumulative audience to 5,922,185. The 6 million mark is now within immediate reach.

Set after ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home,’ the film follows Peter Parker as he tries to rebuild a life in a world that has forgotten him. His isolation is shattered by an enemy who still knows his identity, while a DNA mutation leaves him grappling with dangerous new abilities.

‘Heartsping: Legend of the Whale Jewel’ took third with 123,565 admissions Sunday, bringing its total to 433,808. The animated fantasy sends Romi and Heartsping on an ocean adventure to rescue Romi’s mother after she disappears at sea.

Na Hong-jin’s ‘Hope’ followed in fourth with 32,227 admissions and a cumulative 4,393,887.

‘David’ moved into the top five with 8,343 admissions, taking its overall tally to 289,351. The animated feature traces the journey of an ordinary shepherd boy toward his destiny as king, including his legendary confrontation with Goliath.
