[News Culture] Every August, the sea around Tongyeong becomes more than a scenic backdrop. Warships maneuver across the water, military processions fill the streets and the port city revisits the naval victory that changed the course of the Imjin War.
The 65th Tongyeong Hansan Battle Festival will run from Aug. 12 to 16 at Tongyeong Hansan Battle Plaza and locations across the city. Commemorating the Battle of Hansan, one of the three great victories of the 1592–1598 war, the festival brings Admiral Yi Sun-sin’s leadership and naval strategy into the present through large-scale reenactments, performances and hands-on programs.
The dates fall around the seventh day of the seventh lunar month, the anniversary of the Korean naval victory. In 2026, that anniversary falls on Aug. 14, placing the festival’s signature programs at the heart of the five-day celebration.
Its centerpiece is the Battle of Hansan reenactment, staged on the waters off Tongyeong. Ships, performers and special effects recreate the urgency of the historic confrontation, allowing spectators on shore to follow the action as it unfolds across the sea. The scale of the production turns Tongyeong’s coastline into an open-air historical stage.
The opening ceremony will be accompanied by a special performance and fireworks, setting the tone for the summer nights ahead. Historical programs include a procession honoring the Three Provinces Naval Commander, a reenactment of a Joseon naval inspection, a departure ceremony and a victory homecoming ceremony. Together, they evoke the discipline and pageantry of the naval forces once headquartered in Tongyeong.
The festival also moves beyond conventional historical reenactment. An original musical brings Admiral Yi’s story to the stage, while the Tonight Tongyeong EDM Party and the National Youth Dance Battle draw younger audiences into the celebration. Traditional history and contemporary entertainment share the same waterfront without feeling confined to separate worlds.
Hands-on programs allow visitors to experience elements of naval life for themselves. Families can try exercises inspired by Joseon naval training, traditional Korean archery and laser shooting. A water playground offers relief from the August heat, while cultural activity booths provide lighter ways for children and adults to engage with the festival’s historical themes.
Flea markets and food trucks add the pleasures of a summer outing. Visitors can browse handmade goods, discover locally inspired products and sample food while moving between performances and activities.
Tongyeong’s coastline takes on a different character after sunset. Nighttime performances, fireworks and the illuminated harbor create an atmosphere far removed from the city’s daytime calm. History remains at the center of the festival, but there is still room to slow down, enjoy the sea and experience the easy rhythm of a coastal getaway.
That balance has helped the Tongyeong Hansan Battle Festival grow beyond a local commemorative event. Now recognized as one of Korea’s leading maritime history festivals, it brings together national remembrance, regional identity and contemporary culture against one of the country’s most striking coastal settings.
The festival offers more than a retelling of a famous battle. It shows how history can remain relevant when people are invited to see it, hear it and take part in it.
In Tongyeong, the past does not stand still. It sails across the water, marches through the streets and lights up the summer sky.
