[News Culture] The historical drama ‘Hallan’ has received dual recognition at Bechdel Day 2026. The film was selected for this year’s Bechdel Choice 10, while director and producer Ha Myung-mi was named Bechdelian of the Year in the producer category.
Organized by the Directors Guild of Korea, Bechdel Day is an annual film and series festival that highlights gender-equitable representation and cultural diversity in screen storytelling. Bechdel Choice 10 recognizes works that bring fresh perspectives to women’s lives, while the Bechdelian awards honor directors, writers, actors and producers whose creative contributions have stood out over the past year.
Set against the Jeju April 3 tragedy, ‘Hallan’ approaches history through the struggle of a mother and daughter trying to survive. Rather than attempting to explain the entire historical event, the film remains close to the intimate passage of two people trapped within it.
At the center are Ajin, a mother, and her young daughter Haesaeng. Their desperate attempt to find one another brings the trauma of Jeju April 3 into immediate emotional reach, restoring lives that were long pushed outside the boundaries of official history.
Jeju April 3 has been explored in numerous films and documentaries. ‘Hallan,’ however, deliberately avoids placing gunfire and political confrontation at the forefront. It searches instead for the people who disappeared between those moments, including those who left behind little more than fragments of memory.
That approach is central to the film’s impact. Its story was shaped not only by written records but also by the testimony and lived experiences of survivors. The past therefore emerges not as a sealed historical document, but as something that continues to be felt in the present.
The film translates a vast historical tragedy into the physical and emotional reality of a mother and child. Its restrained direction, finely observed performances and patient accumulation of emotion create an aftereffect that lingers without relying on spectacle.
Its decision to place a woman and a child at the center is equally significant. Women and children, often relegated to the margins of conventional historical narratives, become the principal witnesses and agents of the story.
The film does not merely ask who has the authority to speak about history. It brings forward voices that were always present but rarely given room to be heard.
Ha’s production process also helps explain her recognition as Bechdelian of the Year. She led ‘Hallan’ from its earliest conception through production and completion, preserving its creative direction throughout every stage.
Such an independently sustained process remains unusual within the film industry. Her award acknowledges not only the finished work but also the persistence required to bring it to the screen.
The achievement suggests a broader possibility for Korean cinema: projects led by women creators can establish their own production structures while maintaining a distinct artistic vision.
During its theatrical run, ‘Hallan’ drew more than 30,000 viewers. That figure alone may not qualify as a mainstream box-office breakthrough, but the film’s audience continued to grow after it left theaters.
Following its release on Netflix, the film climbed to No. 1 on the platform’s South Korea Top 10 film chart within two days. The surge introduced ‘Hallan’ to viewers who had missed its theatrical release and demonstrated how streaming platforms can extend the life of smaller films.
The rediscovery reflects a wider shift in Korean cinema. Films that struggle to secure attention in theaters are increasingly finding new audiences and renewed critical interest through streaming services. ‘Hallan’ has become one of the clearest examples of that pattern.
Its international journey has also been notable. The film was invited to the Helsinki Cine Aasia Film Festival and the Florence Korea Film Fest, while also entering competition at the New York Asian Film Festival.
Those selections underscored the film’s ability to move beyond its regional and historical setting. Though rooted in a specific Korean tragedy, its story of separation, survival and memory carries emotional weight across cultural boundaries.
The response in Japan was particularly strong. Screenings were held in Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya and Kyoto, with several venues reporting consecutive sellouts. Additional theaters subsequently added the film, allowing its run to continue for an extended period.
The reception showed that a tragedy tied to one place can still produce recognition far beyond that place. Viewers unfamiliar with Jeju April 3 were able to enter the story through the universal fear of losing family and the instinct to protect those one loves.
The legacy of ‘Hallan’ lies in its refusal to treat history as a single, fixed account. A change in perspective can uncover an entirely different story, particularly when attention shifts toward those who were previously overlooked.
The film also reasserts the role of the creator. Ha’s determination to protect the project’s direction despite the limitations of independent production demonstrates what can emerge when artistic purpose is not surrendered to circumstance.
What ‘Hallan’ preserves is more than a record of the past. The lives revived on screen pass into the memories of those who watch them. From there, they continue to endure as traces that are difficult to erase.
