[News Culture] Two young musicians with sharply different artistic voices will take the stage at Kumho Art Hall Yonsei on Aug. 8.

Percussionist I-Bon Jang, a second-year student at Yewon School, will open the day’s program with a Kumho Prodigy Concert. Violinist Jae-Eun Lee, a sophomore at Seoul National University, will follow in the Kumho Young Artist Concert.

Jang’s recital ventures beyond conventional percussion repertoire, bringing together marimba, snare drum, physical movement and prerecorded sound. Lee, by contrast, turns to four major works from the violin canon, moving from Mozart’s classical clarity to the heightened drama and virtuosity of Schumann, Debussy and Wieniawski.

Jang opens with Camille Saint-Saëns’ “Danse macabre, Op. 40,” arranged for marimba and piano by French percussionist Adélaïde Ferrière. Joined by pianist Sang-Ho Park, he will translate the orchestral work’s restless rhythm and darkly playful character into the bright, percussive resonance of the marimba.

Lynn Glassock’s “Motion for Solo Percussion” follows. The work draws the performer’s gestures and bodily movement directly into the music, revealing the distinctly physical nature of percussion performance.

Jang then turns to Casey Cangelosi’s “Etude in E Minor for Solo Marimba” and “Bad Touch for Solo Performer and Playback.” Written in 2013, “Bad Touch” places the live musician in a tightly controlled exchange with prerecorded sound, allowing the two layers to collide, overlap and respond to one another.

Alexej Gerassimez’s “Asventuras for Solo Snare Drum” explores the full sonic range of a single instrument through strokes on the drumhead, rim and shell, as well as sharply articulated stick clicks. Jang closes the recital with Emmanuel Séjourné’s “Concerto for Marimba and Strings,” performed in an arrangement for marimba and piano.

Jang won first prize at the Korean Dodream Festival Marimba Competition in 2022 and the Doam Music Competition in 2024. He received Yewon School’s Award for Excellence in Performance in 2025 and currently studies with Eun-Jung Kim.

Lee begins her recital with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “Sonata for Violin and Piano in B-flat Major, K. 454.” Performing with pianist Jae-Geun Song, she will move from the work’s measured slow introduction into its lively and finely balanced main section.

She follows with Robert Schumann’s “Violin Sonata No. 3 in A Minor, WoO 27.” The work grew out of Schumann’s contribution to the collaborative “F.A.E. Sonata,” written for violinist Joseph Joachim. Schumann later added two movements of his own, shaping the material into a complete sonata marked by urgency, lyricism and emotional unrest.

The second half opens with Claude Debussy’s “Violin Sonata in G Minor, L. 140,” completed in 1917 as the composer’s final major work. Its shifting rhythms, compressed structure and abrupt changes of color demand an especially precise partnership between violin and piano.

Lee concludes with Henryk Wieniawski’s “Fantaisie brillante on Themes from Gounod’s ‘Faust,’ Op. 20.” Drawing on melodies from Charles Gounod’s opera, the work transforms lyrical themes into a formidable display of speed, articulation and technical control.

Lee won first prize at the Music Chunchu Competition in 2021 and the Strad Competition in 2024. She also received an encouragement prize at the Shinhan Music Awards in 2023. She currently studies at Seoul National University under Jae-Young Kim and Chang-Ho Lim.
