[News Culture] Contemporary gugak has no shortage of competitions, showcases or publicly funded debuts. What it lacks is somewhere for artists to return once the first round of attention has passed.

Nowpan Korea is looking to fill that gap with “FOCUS in LIVE,” a recurring concert series created to give emerging acts a consistent stage—and, over time, help build a scene around them.

The series opens at 3 p.m. on Aug. 8 at DSM Art Hall in Mapo, western Seoul. Further editions are scheduled for Oct. 10 and Dec. 12, establishing a regular slot on the second Saturday of every other month.

The project takes aim at a familiar problem in the contemporary gugak sector. While young musicians can often find competitions and development programs, opportunities to perform regularly, meet audiences and build a sustainable career remain limited.

“FOCUS in LIVE” is structured as more than a sequence of standalone concerts. By bringing artists and listeners back to the same venue, Nowpan Korea hopes to create a base where repertoire, audience data and creative partnerships can accumulate from one show to the next.

Piri band Jeokle will lead the opening performance. Known for reshaping traditional musical language through a contemporary band format, the group will be joined by guest musician Gyeong-gwan Yeom.

Scene and SYOT will take over the remaining dates later this year, each bringing a distinct approach to new music rooted in Korean tradition.

The Seoul program is also intended as the first step toward a wider touring network. Nowpan Korea is developing connections between regional theaters and gugak ensembles, with the goal of creating a circuit that benefits artists, venues and audiences alike.

Under that model, musicians gain regular performance opportunities, theaters secure a steady flow of programming and audiences gain continued access to work that might otherwise disappear after a single premiere.

“We have seen too many promising teams lose momentum because there was nowhere for them to perform after their debut,” a Nowpan Korea representative said. “FOCUS in LIVE is not about producing one concert. It is about creating the conditions artists need to keep working.”

The company added that it hopes the series will grow into a platform where a wider range of contemporary gugak acts can meet audiences, develop their work and build lasting careers together.
