MBC’s A Bona Fide Killer premiered July 31 with a 7.4 percent nationwide rating and 6.8 percent in the Seoul metropolitan area, topping all channels in its time slot, according to Nielsen Korea. The episode climbed to a high of 9.4 percent as the name “Kingfisher” resurfaced, signaling that Yoo Bo-na’s carefully buried past was beginning to catch up with her.
Bo-na has spent years passing as an ordinary working mother. She shares a quiet home with her husband, Kwon Tae-sung, and their daughter, while preparing to return to the office after parental leave.
Nothing about that life is entirely false. The family is real, and so is her determination to protect it. What no one knows is that Bo-na was once a legendary sniper — and may never have fully left that world behind.
The premiere quickly establishes both sides of her life. At home, she moves through the routines of marriage and motherhood. Away from her family, she scales a church rooftop, assembles a rifle and eliminates a target with unnerving calm.
Gong plays the contrast without turning it into a broad joke. Bo-na’s domestic persona feels lived-in rather than performed, which makes the sudden flashes of physical precision more effective. A falling cup is caught before it hits the floor. A criminal is subdued almost on instinct. Her old skills remain close to the surface, even when she is packing lunches or heading back to work.
The episode also reaches into Bo-na’s past, revealing her connection to a shooting 15 years earlier. The Christmas-set opening, capped by a “Merry Christmas” message left in the snow, introduces a colder version of the woman now trying to preserve a normal family life.
Her husband is drawn toward the same hidden world from another direction. While investigating a synthetic drug case, Tae-sung witnesses a vehicle explosion tied to the removal of a major drug figure. The case brings him dangerously close to the truth about Kingfisher — without realizing that the person he is looking for is living under the same roof.
Sung Dong-il’s Kim Bong-pal emerges as another key figure in Bo-na’s secret network, while Seo Jung-yeon’s florist Bae Yoon-ok hints at an identity known as “Margaret.” Rather than resolving those connections immediately, the drama uses them to suggest a larger history of aliases, loyalties and unfinished business.
The closing sequence pulls those threads together. Tae-sung is shaken by reports that Kingfisher has returned. Bo-na, meanwhile, receives a threatening letter accompanied by photographs of her family.
The warning changes the stakes. Her secret is no longer simply at risk of being exposed; the people she built her new life around have become targets.
Based on the Kakao webtoon of the same name, A Bona Fide Killer follows a former sniper attempting to hold on to family life as her past closes in.
