[News Culture] Netflix’s “The East Palace” is gaining traction worldwide, ranking No. 2 on the platform’s Global Top 10 Non-English Shows chart and making the Top 10 in 69 countries.
The fantasy series follows Gu-cheon (Nam Joo-hyuk), a man who can move between the human world and the realm of ghosts, and Saeng-gang (Roh Yoon-seo), a palace maid harboring a secret. After being summoned by the king (Cho Seung-woo), the pair begin investigating a curse that has taken hold of the East Palace.
During its second week of release, “The East Palace” recorded 8.1 million views, based on total viewing hours divided by the show’s running time. It ranked No. 2 among Netflix’s global non-English shows for July 20–26 and entered the Top 10 in 69 countries.
New behind-the-scenes photos released alongside the series’ global performance capture a much lighter mood than the dark supernatural world seen on screen.
Nam Joo-hyuk, who moves between the worlds of the living and the dead as Gu-cheon, is shown reviewing footage after demanding action scenes. Roh Yoon-seo, whose character Saeng-gang senses unseen presences through sound, swaps her restrained on-screen persona for bright smiles between takes.
Cho Seung-woo also drops the imposing presence of the king once the cameras stop rolling, revealing a relaxed side that contrasts sharply with his character.
Kwak Dong-yeon, who plays the ghost of the crown prince, and Jang Young-nam, who portrays the queen dowager consumed by an obsessive attachment to the royal family, also appear in the newly released photos. Their performances have emerged as another talking point among viewers as the series continues to draw attention online.
The images also offer a glimpse at the production behind “The East Palace.” Elaborate sets, visual effects and a range of filming techniques were used to give physical form to the series’ supernatural world, with cast and crew working closely to bring its fantasy setting to life.
