[News Culture] Hope has had the Korean box office largely to itself for two weeks. That run is about to face its biggest test yet.
Na Hong-jin’s film drew another 100,149 moviegoers on July 28, according to the Korean Film Council (KOFIC), taking its cumulative admissions to 3,619,235. It has now spent 14 consecutive days at No. 1 despite sharply divided audience reactions.
The film wasted little time establishing its blockbuster credentials, reaching 1 million admissions in three days, 2 million in five and 3 million in 11.
Set in Hopo, a remote port community near the Korean Demilitarized Zone, Hope begins with reports of a tiger sighting that put local police chief Beom-seok and the village on alert. The incident soon gives way to something far stranger and more unsettling.
Minions & Monsters remained second with 22,067 admissions, bringing its total to 606,430.
The animated adventure follows James, Henry and Ed, three Minions chasing dreams of blockbuster filmmaking, as they set off in search of monsters.
Moana took third with 15,557 admissions and now stands at 939,876.
Toy Story 5 followed at No. 4 with 12,498 admissions, pushing its total to 2,861,140.
Shin Min-a’s The Eyes completed the top five with 6,533 admissions, bringing its cumulative run to 1,524,850.
Now comes Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Opening in Korea on July 29, the Marvel release has already amassed more than 890,000 advance ticket sales, accounting for 72.9% of the presale market.
Those numbers set the stage for the first major challenge to Hope since its release—and a potentially dramatic reshuffling of the Korean box office at the height of the summer season.
