[News Culture] Gilwoo Kim is building his next recital around contrast.

At Seoul Arts Center’s Recital Hall on Aug. 5, the Korean clarinetist will move between the polish of the French school, the theatrical virtuosity of Paganini-inspired writing and the broad lyricism of German Romanticism. Pianist Jieun Han, a professor at Kookmin University, joins him for a program designed to show just how many personalities the clarinet can assume over the course of a single evening.

Rather than settling into one period or style, Kim has chosen works that repeatedly change the instrument’s role.

Philippe Gaubert’s Fantaisie for Clarinet and Piano opens the recital with music that alternates between elegance and agility. Its long lines demand poise, while sudden bursts of movement expose the player’s control at speed.

Béla Kovács then takes the program in two sharply different directions with Hommage à J.S. Bach and Hommage à N. Paganini. The first looks back to Bach through tightly shaped counterpoint and disciplined phrasing. The second is far less restrained, borrowing the spirit of Paganini to turn the clarinet into a vehicle for leaps, speed and outright bravura.

Norbert Burgmüller’s Duo for Clarinet and Piano, Op. 15 closes the first half by changing the balance again. Here, the clarinet is no longer simply the featured voice. Piano and wind instrument trade ideas as equal partners, making interplay as important as individual technique.

Robert Schumann’s Three Romances, Op. 94 opens the second half on a more inward note. The music asks for breadth rather than display, allowing the clarinet’s vocal quality to come forward while the piano shapes the emotional space around it.

The evening ends with Carl Maria von Weber’s Grand Duo Concertant in E-flat Major, Op. 48, the largest and most overtly dramatic work on the program.

Weber gives neither instrument a supporting role. Clarinet and piano are pushed forward as two soloists, trading momentum, lyricism and technical fire across three movements. The finale, with its quick-footed rondo writing, brings the recital to its most extroverted point.

The choice makes Weber an effective destination for a program that begins with refinement and gradually expands in scale and intensity.

Kim is a graduate of Yewon School, Seoul Arts High School and Seoul National University, and later completed his master’s degree with honors at DePaul University. His competition honors include second prize at the Dong-A Music Competition, where no first prize was awarded, and first prize at the Ewha-KyungHyang Music Competition.

His orchestral career has included principal positions with the Civic Orchestra of Chicago and the Seoul Metropolitan Youth Orchestra, along with guest principal appearances for a number of Korean ensembles.

Kim currently serves as principal clarinetist of the Chungbuk Provincial Symphony Orchestra and teaches at Hanyang University. He is also active as a chamber musician with Ensemble Blank and the Rustic Woodwind Quintet.

Jieun Han, his partner for the recital, earned both her master’s and doctoral degrees from the Eastman School of Music. An experienced collaborative pianist and recipient of multiple accompanying awards, she is currently a professor at Kookmin University.
