'The Apartment Job' Turns the Tables on Ji Sung as His 17.8 Billion Won Scheme Starts to Fall Apart

[News Culture] Park Hae-gang spent five episodes building the perfect con. In The Apartment Job Episode 5, almost every part of it began to crack at once.

The July 25 episode of the JTBC weekend drama pushed Hae-gang's 17.8 billion won maintenance reserve scheme into its most dangerous phase yet. Becoming president of the residents' association was supposed to put the money within reach, but an empty account turned his apparent victory into a new mystery, while the fake family he assembled to win the election began exposing its own contradictions.

At the same time, Lee Chung-won moved closer to proving that Hae-gang was behind the artifact discovery that halted the new-town development project. With Jang Sook-jin also learning that the family she trusted was never real, Hae-gang ended the episode under pressure from every direction.

The 17.8 Billion Won Payday That Never Came

Hae-gang and his makeshift family began the episode in celebration mode, convinced that winning the residents' association presidency had brought them within touching distance of their goal. Kang Ha-ri's pointed toast briefly unsettled the mood, while Hae-gang remained visibly uneasy over memories of his past collision with Lee Chung-won, but the group still believed the hardest part of the operation was behind them.

The following morning, Hae-gang arrived for his first day as association president wearing a flower garland and quickly took control of the management account and official seal. He then moved into the final stage of the plan, ordering Kim Kyung-nam to prepare bags for the cash, Jang Je-gil to secure the management office director's seal and Keungdoongi to clear things out at home.

Then came the bank.

Instead of the 17.8 billion won he had risked everything to reach, Hae-gang was handed little more than a small amount of cash and loose change. The reserve account had already been emptied, leaving the enormous suitcase prepared for the money almost comically useless.

The shock quickly turned into rage. After everything he had done to become president, Hae-gang found himself standing in the street with nothing to show for it and no idea where the money had gone.

Rather than walk away, however, he decided to hold on to the presidency. If the former association president, management director or accounting manager had moved the money first, remaining in office was now his best chance of finding out where it went.

What began as a plan to steal 17.8 billion won had suddenly become a hunt for money that someone else may have taken before him.

One Slip From Ha Yoon-kyung—and the Fake Family Starts Coming Apart

Finding the missing money also meant bringing Kang Ha-ri back into the operation. Hae-gang approached her again, reviving the “part-time family” arrangement that appeared to have served its purpose once the election was over.

The bigger problem was that their performance was becoming increasingly difficult to maintain.

Jang Sook-jin began noticing details that did not fit the family she thought she knew. Kim Kyung-nam reacted far too aggressively when Domabaem interfered with Kyung-bok's piggy bank, while Ha-ri casually told Kyung-bok to call her “noona,” an awkward slip that made the household dynamic look increasingly suspicious.

Individually, the mistakes might have been dismissed. Together, they gave Sook-jin reason to look more closely.

The decisive moment came after Ha-ri ran into Hae-gang inside the apartment complex. Worn down by the pressure of continuing to play his wife, she told him she wanted out and finally let her frustration boil over, blurting out that they were a fake family anyway.

Sook-jin was close enough to hear everything.

For Hae-gang, the damage was immediate. The family arrangement had been one of the foundations of the image that carried him into the association presidency, and Sook-jin had accepted that image as genuine. Once she realized the entire household had been staged, the lie was no longer something Hae-gang could manage from inside his own group.

The timing could hardly have been worse. With the money already missing, the cover that gave him access to it was now threatening to collapse as well.

Park Byung-eun Finds the Trail Leading Back to Ji Sung

While Hae-gang scrambled to recover the missing reserve fund and contain the fallout at home, Lee Chung-won was closing in from another direction.

Chung-won had never fully accepted that the artifact discovery responsible for stopping the new-town construction project was a coincidence. He returned to the site and consulted an expert, who confirmed that the artifacts were unusual for the area and unlikely to have surfaced there naturally.

That suspicion led him to the construction-site CCTV. After gaining access to the footage, Chung-won identified a vehicle belonging to Hae-gang and finally found the connection he had been looking for.

The man who benefited from rising apartment values and ultimately became residents' association president now appeared to be the same man who had planted the artifacts that derailed Chung-won's development plans.

For Chung-won, the pieces finally fit together. Hae-gang had not simply taken advantage of the situation; he had helped create it.

That realization shifts their conflict into a much more dangerous phase. Chung-won now has a direct reason to go after Hae-gang just as Hae-gang is becoming more vulnerable than at any previous point in the series.

Hae-gang Is Still in the Game, but No Longer in Control

Episode 5 changes the shape of Hae-gang's con by taking away the advantage that had carried him this far: control.

He built a fake family, manipulated the apartment election and reached the account holding the 17.8 billion won he wanted, only to discover that someone else had already emptied it. At the same time, the people playing his family are becoming harder to manage, Sook-jin has learned the truth, and Chung-won now has evidence linking him to the artifact scheme.

Those problems are no longer separate. The missing reserve fund forces Hae-gang to remain association president, which means he still needs the fake family to hold together even as that lie is beginning to unravel. Chung-won's investigation creates another threat altogether, because exposing the artifact manipulation could destroy the very position Hae-gang fought so hard to obtain.

That leaves The Apartment Job at a clear turning point. Until now, Hae-gang has been the man setting the traps, reading the room and staying one move ahead of everyone around him. Episode 5 reverses that dynamic, forcing him to react to problems he did not anticipate and people he can no longer fully control.

The 17.8 billion won is still out there, but recovering it is no longer his only problem. Hae-gang must now keep his fake family from falling apart, stop Sook-jin from exposing him and stay ahead of Chung-won, who is finally beginning to understand just how much of the chaos around him was engineered.

The con is still alive. The difference is that Hae-gang is no longer the only one playing the game.
