[News Culture] Mixed reactions have done little to slow Hope. Na Hong-jin’s latest feature continued its commanding theatrical run on Wednesday, crossing 2.5 million admissions while extending its stay atop the South Korean box office to eight consecutive days.
According to the Korean Film Council (KOFIC), Hope drew 131,833 moviegoers on July 22, lifting its cumulative total to 2,533,448.
The film has emerged as one of the summer’s biggest theatrical draws despite sharply divided responses to the film itself. It reached 1 million admissions within three days of release and doubled that figure just two days later.
Set near the Korean Demilitarized Zone, Hope follows Beom-seok, the head of a police outpost in Hopo, after local youths report seeing a tiger. What begins as an unusual sighting soon throws the entire village into crisis as an unimaginable reality begins to unfold.
Minions & Monsters remained a distant second with 18,078 admissions, bringing its cumulative total to 428,426.
The animated adventure follows James, Henry and Ed, three Minions dreaming of making a 10-million-admission blockbuster with their debut film, as they embark on a hunt for monsters.
Moana held third place with 13,159 admissions, raising its cumulative total to 808,976.
The Eyes followed in fourth with 11,292 admissions. The Shin Min-a-led suspense thriller has now drawn 1,465,067 moviegoers.
Toy Story 5 rounded out the top five with 9,028 admissions, pushing its cumulative total to 2,775,110.
