SBS' "Unanswered Questions" Examines School Safety Crisis and Teacher-Student Conflict

South Korea's education system is facing mounting scrutiny as violent incidents, legal disputes and growing distrust reshape school environments across the country.

SBS investigative program "Unanswered Questions" will air its latest episode, "True Education and the Ticking Time Bomb – Schools Today," at 11:10 p.m. on July 11. The broadcast examines a series of incidents that have intensified concerns over safety in schools while exploring the increasingly complex relationship between teachers, students and parents.

Among the cases featured is that of an elementary school teacher in Jeju, identified under the pseudonym Jeong So-yoon, who discovered an unidentified liquid inside her personal tumbler in April. Forensic testing later confirmed the substance to be semen.

The teacher says the incident left her unable to continue teaching normally, describing the psychological impact of not knowing who was responsible or why she had been targeted. She eventually took a leave of absence.

The case escalated two months later when another intrusion occurred in her classroom and her chair was deliberately damaged. Police later identified a 16-year-old high school student as the suspect.

While the student reportedly denied intentional wrongdoing, the program examines the continuing trauma experienced by teachers and the difficult balance between protecting juvenile offenders' identities and supporting victims' recovery.

The documentary also broadens its focus beyond a single incident, highlighting a series of recent threats affecting schools, including bomb threats, reports involving weapons and assaults against teachers.

Another major issue is the growing legal conflict between educators and parents. Teachers argue that classroom discipline has become increasingly difficult as reports of alleged child abuse have risen, creating anxiety that even routine disciplinary actions may trigger legal complaints.

Parents, however, contend that teachers' disciplinary methods should remain subject to scrutiny. The episode revisits a case involving a middle school in South Gyeongsang Province, where a parent filed a child abuse complaint against a teacher over alleged verbal abuse and inappropriate physical contact, citing CCTV footage and witness statements. Additional legal action was reportedly filed this year.

As disagreements over student behavior and classroom discipline continue to deepen, "Unanswered Questions" asks how schools can protect both students and educators while restoring trust in the educational environment.
