Super Junior members Leeteuk and Heechul aren't chasing current trends with their first project as Super Junior-83z. Instead, the longtime bandmates lean into the guitar-driven pop rock that defined much of the 2000s, giving the familiar sound a polished update for a new generation.
SM Entertainment offered a first taste of the duo's debut mini album, Promise, through an album preview released ahead of its July 13 launch.
The record pivots between two distinct moods. The title track, "Promise," pairs ringing guitars with upbeat pop melodies, while "ONSAEMIRO" takes a more cinematic route, building on live-band arrangements and an emotionally driven performance. Together, the songs reveal a project that values melody and musicianship as much as nostalgia.
"ONSAEMIRO" also carries added meaning for longtime fans. Penned by Heechul, the lyrics express an enduring promise between the duo and their audience, turning the song into both a rock ballad and a personal message of appreciation.
Rather than recreating the past, Super Junior-83z uses the sound of early-2000s Korean rock as a foundation for something that feels unmistakably their own. The result is a debut that balances youthful energy with the confidence of two artists more than two decades into their careers.
Promise will be released on July 13.
