For many Koreans, Taehwagwan is remembered as the site where the Declaration of Independence was proclaimed during the March First Movement in 1919. A new exhibition at the Seoul Museum of History invites visitors to look beyond that defining moment, tracing more than 600 years of political, urban and social transformation embedded within a single address in Seoul's Insa-dong.

Presented at the Gongpyeong Historic Sites Museum, a branch of the Seoul Museum of History, "Taehwagwan: A Space Connecting Time" opens on June 26 and continues through March 7, 2027. Through historical records, archaeological materials and archival photographs, the exhibition reconstructs the many identities the site has assumed—from an aristocratic residence and royal estate to a celebrated modern restaurant, an independence landmark and eventually a center for community welfare.

The exhibition unfolds in three chapters, each reflecting a distinct period in the site's evolution.

The opening section, "The Formation of a Private Space," explores Taehwagwan before its modern fame, introducing the Neungseong Gu family residence, Taehwajeong Pavilion, the historic Jamnyongji site and the property's transformation into Sunhwagung Palace during the Joseon Dynasty.

The second chapter, "A Space of City and History," turns to the emergence of modern Seoul. Alongside the flourishing restaurant culture represented by Myeongwolgwan and Taehwagwan, it revisits March 1, 1919, when the site became the setting for one of the defining moments in Korea's struggle for independence.

The final section, "A Space Expanded to Society," follows the site's next chapter as Taehwa Women's Center and later Taehwa Social Center, highlighting its role in advancing women's education, child welfare and medical assistance during the formative years of Korea's modern social welfare system.

Among the featured objects are historic maps, official documents, postcards and photographs that chart the site's changing identity across six centuries. Highlights include the Gusuyeongmyeong Nameplate, the Imunnaegu Yunokgado Plan, an original copy of the Declaration of Independence, photographs of Taehwa Women's Center and architectural drawings of the Taehwa Social Center building.

The exhibition will also be accompanied by two public lectures. On July 24, Professor Bae Woo-sung of the University of Seoul will examine the historical relationship between the Taehwagwan site and the Neungseong Gu clan during the Joseon Dynasty. On July 31, Professor Lee Jun-woo of Kangnam University will discuss Taehwa's institutional legacy and the development of social welfare initiatives in modern Korea.

Rather than presenting Taehwagwan solely as the backdrop to the March First Movement, the exhibition reframes the landmark as a place where centuries of urban life, political change and civic memory intersect. In doing so, it encourages visitors to reconsider how familiar city spaces can preserve the layered histories of a nation.
