South Korea's largest annual theater celebration is returning to its birthplace. The 44th Korea Theater Festival will take over venues across Busan from July 1 to July 26, marking the event's first return to the city in 16 years.

The festival traces its roots to the National Regional Theater Festival, which was first launched in Busan in 1983. Over the decades, it has grown into one of the country's premier theater events, fostering artistic exchange among regional theater communities while spotlighting original productions from across South Korea.

This year's edition marks the festival's return to Busan following previous local editions in 1997 and 2010. Performances and events will be held at major venues throughout the city, including Busan Cinema Center, Busan Citizens Hall, Geumjeong Cultural Center, Busan Cultural Center, Baekyang Cultural Arts Center and Gaon Art Hall.

The opening ceremony will take place on July 1 at the Busan Cinema Center's Roof Theater. Headlining the launch is the original musical Je: Sacrifice, Then and Now, a production that traces the evolution of Korean theater from the introduction of melodrama during the Japanese colonial period to the establishment of modern theater festivals in Korea. The work is designed to connect the past, present and future of Korean theater through a single narrative.

A centerpiece of the festival will be the main competition, where theater companies representing 16 metropolitan cities and provinces will present productions selected as standout works in their respective regions.

The program will also feature the International Directors Exchange Project, pairing overseas directors with Busan-based theater companies to develop and stage new works. Additional initiatives include a networking festival for emerging theater artists and a range of participatory events aimed at bringing local residents closer to the performing arts.

Actor Yoo Jae-myung has been appointed festival ambassador, while actor Ko In-beom will serve as chair of the festival's promotional committee.

Organizers expect the event to strengthen connections within Korea's performing arts sector while generating new momentum for Busan's cultural landscape through a month of theater-centered programming across the city.
