Travelers passing through Seoul Station and the heart of Myeong-dong can now get a preview of some of Korea’s most celebrated festivals before heading to the actual destinations.
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, in partnership with the Korea Tourism Organization, is operating the Global K-Festival Pop-Up Store from June 19 to July 5 at the second-floor concourse of Seoul Station and Noon Square in Myeong-dong.
The initiative introduces six officially designated Global Festivals and four Emerging Global Festivals to both domestic and international visitors. The Global Festival lineup includes the Suwon Hwaseong Cultural Festival, Incheon Pentaport Music Festival, Hwacheon Sancheoneo Ice Festival, Boryeong Mud Festival, Andong Maskdance Festival, and Jinju Namgang Yudeung Festival. Emerging Global Festivals include the Daegu Chimac Festival, Busan International Rock Festival, Sunchang Fermented Food Festival, and Jeongnamjin Jangheung Water Festival.
Many of these festivals have been held for decades and have become defining examples of Korea’s regional festival culture. Events such as the Hwacheon Sancheoneo Ice Festival, where participants fish through frozen rivers in the middle of winter, and the internationally renowned Boryeong Mud Festival have helped showcase Korea’s seasonal attractions and local identities to global audiences.
The pop-up is built around the slogan “Feel the Vibe, Live the Festival” and adopts a movie theater concept throughout the venue. Visitors are greeted by festival promotional videos edited in the style of movie trailers, while displays designed as screening schedules provide information about locations, dates, and key programs.
Guests can also enter their name, nationality, and favorite movie genre at a kiosk to receive personalized festival recommendations and a custom-designed festival ticket.
Additional activities include the Global K-Festival Challenge, where visitors complete quizzes and games while learning about each event. To encourage participation from overseas travelers, organizers have installed a photo booth that allows users to create virtual “four-cut” souvenir photos using graphics from their matched festival. Multilingual staff members are also available on-site to assist visitors.
Participants who complete all activities will be entered into prize drawings for festival merchandise and discount vouchers redeemable at the actual festivals, creating a direct link between the urban promotional experience and future travel throughout Korea.
