Actor-producer Lim Soo-jung returns to the big screen with The Second Child, a mystery fantasy film set for release on July 1.
Directed by Yoo Eun-jung, the film follows Soo-an, a young girl who awakens from a three-year coma only to find her family transformed by tragedy. As she reunites with her grieving mother Geum-ok and encounters Jae-in, a mysterious girl who bears the face of her deceased older sister, Soo-an becomes entangled in the secrets of a mysterious fairy tale known as the "Shadow Tale."
Invited to the Vision section of the 30th Busan International Film Festival, The Second Child drew attention as the latest feature from director Yoo Eun-jung, whose previous film The Door of Night Opens established a distinctive fantasy-driven cinematic voice. The project has also generated interest for Lim's involvement as both a producer and cast member.
Park So-yi, known for Dr. Cheon and Lost Talisman, Pawn and Deliver Us From Evil, stars as Soo-an, a girl struggling to cope with the loss of her older sister. Yuna, whose recent credits include The Great Flood, Dark Nuns and Pachinko, takes on the role of Jae-in, the mysterious child at the center of the story. Lim plays Geum-ok, a grieving mother haunted by guilt, loss and growing anxiety after the death of her eldest daughter.
The newly released main trailer offers a glimpse into the film's unsettling atmosphere. Geum-ok, already burdened by grief, becomes increasingly suspicious after Jae-in enters her family's life. As Soo-an and Jae-in grow closer, the story raises an eerie question: "Do I look like you, or do you look like me?"
The trailer further introduces the mythology of the "Shadow Tale," suggesting that a hidden shadow world is beginning to influence reality. Fractured mirrors, ominous figures emerging from the darkness and dreamlike images of two children falling through a mysterious realm hint at a story that blurs the boundaries between fantasy and reality.
With its haunting imagery, layered family drama and distinctive fantasy mythology, The Second Child positions itself as one of the most intriguing Korean mystery films arriving this summer.
