Director Na Hong-jin’s new feature HOPE is set to open in South Korea on July 15, marking the filmmaker’s first theatrical release since The Wailing a decade ago.
The film centers on Beom-seok, the head of a local office in Hopo Port near the Demilitarized Zone, who is drawn into a series of extraordinary events after reports emerge that a tiger has been spotted in the area. As concern spreads through the village, the situation develops into something far beyond what residents initially believed.
Starring Hwang Jung-min, Zo In-sung and Jung Ho-yeon, HOPE has already attracted international attention ahead of its release. The project was invited to the Competition section of the 79th Cannes Film Festival and secured pre-sales in more than 200 countries and territories worldwide.
According to the distributor, the story follows a group of people investigating the mysterious force threatening a rural community. What begins as an effort to protect the village gradually expands into a larger narrative that shifts perspective as the mystery unfolds.
