The journey toward the Korean premiere of the musical "Hell's Kitchen," presented as the world's first licensed production, has officially begun. A powerhouse cast including Son Seung-yeon, Kim Su-ha, Park Ji-won, Park Hye-na, Choi Hyun-sun, Jung Young-joo, Kim Young-joo, K.Will, Tei, Park Kwang-sun and Han Seung-yoon brought vibrant energy to the project's first gathering.
Recently, the cast, creative team and staff from Korea and abroad came together for the production's first script reading. During the session, the actors vividly brought their characters to life and showcased their enthusiasm for the show.
Photos released by producer S&Co. on June 8 captured the cast's focus and dedication. Immersed in the script, the actors concentrated on understanding their characters and the story while carefully building each scene and emotional beat. Cast members and creators also exchanged ideas freely, filling the room with anticipation and excitement for the production. The passionate atmosphere of the first meeting further heightened expectations for what "Hell's Kitchen" will bring to the stage.
Before rehearsals began, associate director Monet introduced the show's key characters, setting and central themes to the cast.
"'Hell's Kitchen' is a story about a mother and daughter, a story about hope, and a story about the power of mentors and art to completely transform our lives," Monet said. "Set in a city that symbolizes dreams and hope, it follows people searching for their own answers. We will work hard to deliver the soaring energy and emotional impact that make 'Hell's Kitchen' so special."
Producer Shin Dong-won also shared his thoughts on the production.
"When I first encountered this work, I was overwhelmed by the music and energy pouring from the stage, and the meaning of the words 'Hell's Kitchen' took on an entirely new dimension," he said. "More than simply referring to a neighborhood in New York, this production tells a coming-of-age journey about finding one's own voice through dreams, hope and the love of family amid harsh realities. I hope audiences leave the theater feeling a little braver and a little warmer."
Inspired by the life and music of Alicia Keys, "Hell's Kitchen" follows Ali, a young woman growing up in New York's Hell's Kitchen neighborhood during the 1990s, as she discovers her own voice through music and sets out into the world. The musical features some of Alicia Keys' most beloved songs, including Fallin', If I Ain't Got You and Empire State of Mind, alongside newly created music written for the production. Blending powerful R&B, soul and hip-hop sounds, the show promises an electrifying theatrical experience.
