Veteran actor Hwang Jung-min returns to director Na Hong-jin's world for the first time in a decade since "The Wailing," delivering a performance that has already drawn widespread acclaim from international critics ahead of "Hope"'s theatrical release this summer.

In "Hope" (HOPE), Hwang plays Beom-seok, the head of the Hopo Port branch office. When an unimaginable crisis descends on the village, he finds himself caught between his responsibility to protect the community and his fear of an unknown presence. With communication cut off and outside assistance nowhere in sight, Beom-seok becomes the film's emotional and dramatic center.

Hwang brings depth and realism to the role through a performance layered with urgency, vulnerability and determination. Reflecting on the character, he said he believed Beom-seok's energy needed to be established clearly from the beginning for the audience to fully experience the journey of "Hope," revealing the intense preparation that went into shaping the role.

Following its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, critics were quick to single out Hwang's performance. Discussing Film described him as "an outstanding actor," noting that his fear-filled expressions during the film's opening stretch play a vital role in building tension. The Hollywood Reporter praised his ability to shift effortlessly between authority and terror, calling Beom-seok a compelling character and Hwang "a hero defined by vulnerability."

International Business Times highlighted Hwang's trademark charisma and approachable screen presence, while Loud and Clear Reviews commended his performance for grounding the film's relentless momentum and helping audiences remain fully immersed in its escalating drama.

"Hope" follows Beom-seok after reports of a tiger appearing near a village located close to the Demilitarized Zone trigger a state of emergency. As residents struggle to understand what is happening, he is forced to confront an increasingly unbelievable reality.

Years in the making, "Hope" marks the latest feature from Na Hong-jin, whose work has earned acclaim for its immersive storytelling, meticulous visual design and masterful command of suspense. The film is scheduled to open in theaters this summer.
