Fifties Professionals intensified both its character conflicts and long-buried mysteries, delivering one of its most suspenseful episodes yet.
Episode 4 of the MBC Friday-Saturday drama continued its upward ratings momentum on May 30, recording 5.0% in the Seoul metropolitan area, 5.2% nationwide, and a peak of 6.1%, according to Nielsen Korea.
The episode opened with immediate intensity. Jung Ho-myung (Shin Ha-kyun) found himself surrounded by members of the In-gu Gang and forced into a fight with no easy escape. Despite being heavily outnumbered, he survived through a combination of raw determination, quick instincts, and relentless physical combat. The sequence served not only as an action showcase but also as a powerful demonstration of the character's survival instincts.
Ho-myung's battles, however, extended far beyond the streets. As he became increasingly entangled with Bong Je-soon (Oh Jung-se), his commitment to the mission created greater distance between himself and his family. The strain reached a breaking point when his son Ji-woo was forced to return home alone, triggering an outburst from his wife Kwon Oh-ran (Shin Dong-mi). Although Ho-myung attempted to reclaim some sense of normalcy, the reality of his circumstances made even an ordinary family life seem unattainable.
Yoo In-gu's (Hyun Bong-sik) situation also deteriorated rapidly. Chairman Do (Kwon Yul) openly pressured him by raising issues connected to capital investments while exposing evidence of Yoo's illegal distribution activities. The involvement of Geum Kang-sik (Lee Soon-won), a key figure within the In-gu Gang, further shifted the balance of power and signaled a dangerous change in the criminal hierarchy.
Political tensions escalated as well. Han Kyung-wook (Kim Sang-kyung) personally confronted rival politician Kim Sun-jung (Kang Shin-il), urging him to step aside. Instead, Kim responded with a fierce counterattack. At the same time, Prosecutor Kang Young-ae (Kim Shin-rok) continued connecting the dots between the present-day investigation and a mysterious incident from ten years earlier. Her decision to travel directly to Yeongseondo ultimately placed her in significant danger.
Cornered and desperate, Yoo In-gu turned to an extreme solution. Believing he had no other options, he began plotting to eliminate Prosecutor Kang Young-ae in an effort to regain control of the situation. Recognizing the imminent threat, Team Leader Jo (Kim Sang-ho) reached out to Jung Ho-myung for help. Once again, Ho-myung found himself forced to choose between his family and the mission.
The episode concluded with its most explosive moment. Racing to the scene, Ho-myung arrived at a cafe that had descended into chaos and finally came face-to-face with Kang Beom-ryong (Heo Sung-tae). The two men stood locked in a tense confrontation, creating the sense that violence could erupt at any second. Their long-awaited meeting instantly became one of the drama's most memorable moments and dramatically heightened anticipation for the next episode.
At the center of it all was Shin Ha-kyun's commanding performance. Balancing the conflicting roles of devoted family man and relentless operative pursuing the truth, he anchored the episode with emotional depth and precision. Combined with the drama's fast-moving narrative, intricate relationships, and steadily unfolding mystery, Episode 4 further solidified Fifties Professionals as one of the season's most compelling crime dramas.
Fifties Professionals follows three men who have passed the midpoint of their lives and find themselves pulled back into action. Armed with loyalty, instinct, and unfinished business, their fight for survival continues every Friday and Saturday night.
