The pieces are finally falling into place in Fifties Professionals. As long-buried fractures from the past collide with present-day ambitions, the mystery surrounding a missing object drives the story beyond a simple manhunt and into a tense struggle fueled by survival, betrayal, and revenge.
The third episode, which aired on May 29, set a new ratings record for the series, reaching a peak of 7.6%, with 5.6% in the Seoul metropolitan area and 5.5% nationwide, according to Nielsen Korea. Buoyed by growing word of mouth, the drama continues to build momentum.
The episode first turned its focus to the history shared by Kang Beom-ryong (Heo Sung-tae) and Ma Gong-bok (Lee Hak-joo). Beom-ryong's overwhelming strength and Gong-bok's admiration for him quickly established the foundation of their relationship. In the present, however, the dynamic has shifted dramatically. Trapped in a relentless chase, the pair found themselves pushed into desperate situations that blended humor with tragedy.
The emotional center of the episode arrived when Gong-bok chose to sacrifice himself for Beom-ryong. The moment elevated their connection beyond simple loyalty, revealing a bond that resembles family.
Meanwhile, Jung Ho-myeong (Shin Ha-kyun) intensified his pursuit of the truth. Using Bong Je-soon (Oh Jung-se) and Gong-bok as crucial links, he began uncovering details surrounding a case that had remained buried for a decade. The truth behind the Yeongseondo Ferry Incident proved powerful enough to reshape the entire narrative.
Revelations that several characters had once operated under Han Kyung-wook's (Kim Sang-kyung) orders, only to discover they too had been manipulated, blurred the line between victim and perpetrator. The confession added new complexity to the story and deepened its moral ambiguity. Ho-myeong's proposal to join forces in the name of revenge further hinted at a dangerous alliance yet to come.
Bong Je-soon's personal struggles added another layer of emotional weight. Forced from his home and reduced to living in a cramped room while struggling with fading memories, he found himself on the edge of despair. A character once associated with comic relief suddenly became one of the drama's most heartbreaking figures.
Elsewhere, tension continued to mount around Prosecutor Kang Young-ae (Kim Shin-rok). Warnings from those around her evolved into a growing sense of invisible danger, while her investigation into a long-forgotten case uncovered only more unanswered questions.
One statement in particular deepened the mystery: “The culprit wasn't a person. It was a dog.” The shocking remark pushed the case further into uncertainty and heightened the suspense surrounding the truth.
The episode concluded with one of its strongest moments yet. Ho-myeong stormed into enemy territory alone, determined to overturn the balance of power. Even when faced with overwhelming odds, he refused to back down. The final confrontation set the stage for an even more explosive chapter ahead.
Through its seamless movement between past and present, emotionally charged character dynamics, and increasingly confident pacing, Episode 3 further strengthened the identity of Fifties Professionals. Shin Ha-kyun's commanding performance, the evolving bond between Heo Sung-tae and Lee Hak-joo, Oh Jung-se's grounded portrayal, and Kim Shin-rok's mystery-driven storyline combined to deliver one of the series' most compelling episodes so far.
Fifties Professionals Episode 4 airs on May 30 at 9:50 p.m.
