Veteran actor Choi Min-sik and rising star Choi Hyun-wook are set to share the screen in Netflix’s upcoming suspense drama Notes from the Last Row, a story about obsession, talent and the dangerous line between admiration and fixation.
Premiering on June 26, Notes from the Last Row follows Heo Moon-oh (Choi Min-sik), a failed novelist and university literature professor who discovers the extraordinary writing talent of Lee Kang (Choi Hyun-wook), a mysterious student who always sits in the last row of his classroom. As Heo becomes increasingly fascinated by the young man’s work, his curiosity gradually turns into obsession.
The series marks the latest project from director Kim Kyu-tae, known for his acclaimed work on the Netflix series The Trunk and dramas Our Blues and It's Okay, That's Love. His reputation for exploring the complexities of human psychology has already heightened anticipation for the new series.
The newly released teaser poster immediately captures attention through the striking contrast between its two leads. Heo Moon-oh appears startled, as if consumed by something beyond his control, while Lee Kang maintains a detached and cynical expression. Their opposing emotions hint at an unpredictable relationship that will drive the story forward.
Fragments of text scattered across the torn poster further tease the literary lessons that bring the two characters together, while raising questions about the unusual bond that develops between them.
The teaser trailer deepens the mystery. It opens with Heo Moon-oh hesitating before ultimately giving up on writing altogether. Twenty years after publishing his first novel, he has failed to complete another book and now spends his days teaching literature at a university.
Everything begins to change when he notices Lee Kang, the student who always occupies the last seat in the classroom. Despite the young man's unreadable expression and seemingly indifferent attitude, Heo tells him, “You have talent.”
Subsequent scenes show Lee Kang thanking his professor during an award acceptance speech, suggesting the possibility of a meaningful mentor-student relationship. At the same time, Heo’s growing frustration while reading Lee Kang’s work reveals just how captivated he has become by the student's remarkable talent.
As their private literary lessons continue, the two gradually become more comfortable with one another, sharing jokes and even high-fives. Yet the atmosphere shifts dramatically when Heo asks, “That story you wrote for your assignment... was it real?”
The question instantly transforms the tone of the trailer, suggesting that Lee Kang’s writing may contain secrets far more unsettling than anyone initially imagined.
