The 2026 Namsangol Hanok Concert "Sigong Ieum" at Namsangol Hanok Village carries the meaning of connecting joyful sounds across time and space. Within traditional Korean houses layered with traces of the past, contemporary stories and melodies are newly woven into historic surroundings.
This year’s program is divided into a BOOK concert designed for children and families and a MUSIC concert that embraces the atmosphere of early summer nights. On May 23 and 24, lectures and hands-on workshops themed around goblins and earthworms will be held at the Yi Seung-eop House at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. On June 5 at 7:30 p.m., an outdoor instrumental picnic concert takes place in the courtyard of the Min Family House.
Author Lee Goeun’s "K-Goblin Encyclopedia: More Stories Than I Knew" makes full use of the hanok setting. Listening to tales of creatures from Korean folklore such as the nine-tailed fox, Yeongno and hungry ghosts beneath traditional tiled roofs deepens the immersive atmosphere. Shadow plays created with OHP film between wooden pillars and paper doors, along with mask-making activities, invite visitors into a playful encounter with mythical beings.
Kim Jiwon’s "Let’s Raise Earthworms" shifts attention toward the ecological importance of earthworms, often called the hidden workers of the ecosystem. Constantly moving through soil, earthworms supply oxygen to the ground while breaking down organic matter into nutrient-rich castings that support plant growth. Participants create companion earthworm figures through finger knitting and plant seeds using real earthworm compost, experiencing the cycle of coexistence between humans and nature through tactile activities.
The June 5 concert is led by flutist Philip Yundt, who completed advanced performance studies at the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich and currently serves as a professor at the Neuchâtel Conservatory while working as guest principal flutist for the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra. Alongside a degree in economics from Harvard University, he is known for his dynamic performance style.
Joined by pianist Ahn Hojeong, Yundt will perform original soundtracks from widely loved Korean dramas including Crash Landing on You, Guardian: The Lonely and Great God, The Legend of the Blue Sea and Reply 1988. The combination of familiar melodies and a relaxed picnic-style concert inside a hanok courtyard lowers the barriers often associated with classical instrumental music while creating a more accessible connection with audiences.
