The Korean premiere of the music play Brokeback Mountain has unveiled profile images for its 12 principal cast members, officially setting the stage for the production’s emotional narrative. The newly released visuals expand each character’s inner world beyond the stage, offering audiences an early glimpse into the atmosphere and emotional texture of the work.
The production is built around intersecting emotional journeys between characters shaped by time, memory and restraint. The role of middle-aged Ennis, carrying the accumulated weight of life and unresolved memories, will be played by Jung Sang-hoon and Lee Sanghong. Younger versions of Ennis are portrayed by Joo Minjin and Hong Seungan, capturing the fragile inner conflict between personal desire, social expectation and responsibility.
Meanwhile, the role of Jack, a character moving toward freedom and possibility, is shared by Jung Hwi and Yoon Soho. Their interpretations emphasize Jack’s direct emotional energy and restless momentum. Alma, portrayed by Jeon Jaehee and Choi Hayoon, embodies the quiet fractures of a life struggling not to collapse beneath emotions left unspoken.
The role of Joe Aguirre will be performed by Min Sungwook and Jung Myunggoon, whose restrained presence and steady gaze anchor the production’s emotional balance. Lee Youngmi and Moon Hyewon, cast as Bolaire, add further layers of lyricism and emotional contrast to the stage.
Originally based on Annie Proulx’s short story and widely known through the film adaptation directed by Ang Lee, "Brokeback Mountain" reimagines the story through theatrical language and music. Beginning in 1963 on Brokeback Mountain, the work follows the relationship between two men across more than two decades, tracing repeated reunions and prolonged absences while examining emotional endurance within a repressive era.
The Korean premiere is directed by Byun Youngjin, formerly of theater company Fire Train and recipient of the Young Theater Award at the 62nd Baeksang Arts Awards. Through previous works including "Inhwa," "An Accidental Ending" and "An Angel Sleeps on the Collarbone," Byun established a distinctive stage language built on layered memory and emotional accumulation, an approach expected to shape this production as well.
Performances run from June 23 through September 6 at YES24 Art One Theater 1.
