ENA drama "Scarecrow" intensified its psychological tension after passing the midpoint of the series, pushing its characters into deeper conflict and emotional collapse.
Episode 8, which aired May 12, recorded a nationwide rating of 7.4 percent, setting a new personal best for the series. The drama also peaked at 8.2 percent per minute to rank No.1 in its time slot, while its 2049 demographic rating climbed to 3.0 percent, proving its growing buzz.
In the episode, Kang Tae-joo (Park Hae-soo) and Cha Si-young (Lee Hee-jun) finally collided head-on.
After waking up in the hospital, Kang Tae-joo immediately headed to the funeral hall of Cha Si-young’s mother, where he unleashed emotions he had long suppressed. His sudden outburst — even pulling out handcuffs in the middle of the funeral — instantly shattered the atmosphere and marked the beginning of an extreme confrontation.
Later, Kang Tae-joo opened up to fellow detective Park Dae-ho (Ryu Hae-jun), confessing, “If I stayed still, it felt like I would collapse from the inside.”
Cha Si-young, however, turned the situation to his advantage. During the internal audit investigation, he shifted responsibility for abusive conduct onto Kang Tae-joo and coldly declared, “This is the difference in class.” The line made the imbalance of power between the two men even more explicit.
Kang Soon-young (Seo Ji-hye) also deepened the tension. After recovering memories shaken by the shock of Lee Gi-beom’s death, she stood alone in front of the prosecution office holding a protest sign reading “Punish murderer Cha Si-young.”
But following a clash with Kim Hee-jin (Hong Bi-ra), she was eventually detained in a police holding cell, creating another wave of instability.
Meanwhile, the identity of the figure believed to be behind the Lee Gi-beom case was revealed to be Lee Gi-hwan (Jung Moon-sung), pushing the story into an entirely new phase. Blaming Kang Tae-joo for his younger brother’s death, Lee Gi-hwan cut ties with him while appearing to ignore the violence and manipulation unfolding inside the system.
The situation became even more tangled as Im Seok-man (Baek Seung-hwan) was falsely cornered in the process.
In the end, Kang Tae-joo chose to leave Gangseong behind after declaring, “I will destroy it no matter what.” But while he walked away, Cha Si-young tightened his grip on the board by manipulating yet another case.
The ending then revealed the body of another victim, signaling that the serial murder case was far from over. At the same time, the repeated appearance of the same symbolic object raised new questions about a larger chain of crimes still hidden beneath the surface.
ENA’s "Scarecrow" continues to tightly explore how power, violence and truth collide inside a corrupted structure — and how each character’s choices create irreversible consequences.
