Healing on the Horizon, Fishing Villages Emerge as Spaces of Rest and Recovery

뉴스컬처 2026-05-11 13:09:00 신고

Wide-open coastal villages are drawing attention as restorative spaces for exhausted modern lives. Endless horizons stretching beyond sightlines offer a sense of visual liberation, delivering a different kind of comfort from the grounded calm of forests and mountain trails.

The dynamic scenery created by waves and tidal flats, combined with the vibrant energy unique to harbor towns, quietly washes away the stress accumulated in daily life. Rest experienced in spaces filled with the vitality of nature restores energy depleted by relentless urban routines.

The appeal of marine tourism is now arriving in the heart of the city. From May 11 to 13, the “2026 Returning to Fishing Villages & Coastal Tourism Festival” will take place at Gwanghwamun Plaza in Seoul. Led by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries and the Korea Fisheries Infrastructure Public Agency, the event will bring together more than 30 organizations and institutions from across the country. Visitors will be able to experience the atmosphere of the seaside through immersive programs designed to recreate the romance of coastal life amid the city landscape.

The festival aims to offer urban residents a brief escape from nonstop city routines while introducing the broader appeal of fishing villages. By highlighting the psychological comfort and healing effects associated with the sea, organizers hope to reposition coastal communities as destinations not only for travel, but also for emotional recovery and renewed vitality. Through approachable storytelling around seaside life, the event also seeks to generate meaningful tourism interest.

The venue will feature hands-on programs designed for immediate participation and immersion. Offerings range from culinary booths showcasing regional seafood specialties to information on “fishing village workations,” reflecting growing lifestyle trends that blend remote work with travel. One of the event’s most notable attractions is a nighttime relaxation lounge operating until 8 p.m. Designed with tranquil seaside imagery and rhythmic wave sounds, the meditation sessions aim to stabilize brain activity and guide visitors into a deeper state of relaxation.

The reason many people instinctively seek the sea as a place of comfort lies in the healing qualities of natural white noise and the ocean’s distinctive sense of openness. “Ocean gazing,” a practice of clearing the mind while focusing entirely on sound and scenery, helps ease anxiety and restore inner calm. Combined with freshly caught seafood and the warm everyday culture of coastal communities, fishing villages offer an emotional pull rarely found in inland tourism destinations.
