Kim Yong-bin claimed victory on his very first appearance on KBS2’s ‘Stars’ Top Recipe at Fun-Staurant.’
The May 8 broadcast featured a competition themed around “tang” dishes. Kim Yong-bin, Moon Jung-hee and Yano Shiho each presented their own recipes, with the final winner decided by an on-site tasting panel.
Kim Yong-bin entered the competition with “Daechang Dakbokkeumtang,” a recipe inspired by the chicken stew once made by his late grandmother. The dish added beef intestines to traditional dakbokkeumtang for a richer texture, while curry powder and roasted soybean powder enhanced the flavor. Singer Chu Hyuk-jin, one of Kim’s close friends, also appeared during the cooking process to help prepare ingredients.
The episode also revealed stories from Kim Yong-bin’s school days. Alongside Chu Hyuk-jin, he visited Daegu Suseong Middle School to look through old school records. His long-haired student photo and report card drew attention, while a police station record initially surprised viewers before it was revealed to be related to volunteer work, creating a lighter moment in the broadcast.
The competition unfolded in multiple rounds. In the first round, Kim Yong-bin’s “Daechang Dakbokkeumtang” faced Yano Shiho’s “Cashew Nut Samgyetang,” with Kim advancing to the next stage. He later competed against Moon Jung-hee’s “Perilla Seed Dakgomtang” in the final round and secured the overall win once again.
Yano Shiho also spoke about her family during the broadcast. She reflected on the passing of her father-in-law, who died of a heart attack in April 2023, saying that “there were major changes for the whole family.” She also mentioned the emotional impact on her daughter and changes in her husband Yoshihiro Akiyama. The episode further showed her shopping at Namdaemun Market while preparing a gift for her husband.
Toward the end of the broadcast, Yoshihiro Akiyama and Kim Jae-joong made surprise appearances, teasing their upcoming participation on the show.
Speaking after the win, Kim Yong-bin said, “It means a lot because it feels like the food my grandmother used to make has now been recognized through my own hands.”
The winning menu, “Daechang Dakbokkeumtang,” will be released as a ready-to-eat product following the broadcast.
