Laughter gave way to tears as “Fun-Staurant” delivered one of its most emotional episodes yet, focusing not on recipes but on deeply personal stories.
The April 24 broadcast of KBS2’s “Fun-Staurant” introduced new faces while leaving a lasting emotional impact through the stories of its cast. At the center were Kim Yong-bin, winner of “Mr. Trot 3,” and the soon-to-be-married couple Shinji and Moon Won.
Kim’s day began not on stage, but in his hometown of Daegu. Taking a rare break from his busy schedule, he revisited streets filled with childhood memories. Though warmly greeted by locals, his steps ultimately led him back to the person who meant the most in his life.
His grandmother, who had been like both a mother and a friend, passed away from pancreatic cancer just six months before Kim reached the top of his career. Surrounded by the traces she left behind, Kim chose to revive her memory through food.
Using a recipe passed down from his aunt, he carefully recreated “his grandmother’s taste.” Despite his modest expectations, his cooking impressed Chef Lee Yeon-bok, drawing praise and a quiet smile from Kim himself.
But the most powerful moment came afterward.
Carrying the lunchbox he had prepared, Kim visited his grandmother’s grave. Words he had never been able to say finally surfaced. “I’m sorry I came late.” “I miss you.” What began as calm reflections soon collapsed into tears. Singing a song his grandmother once loved, Kim returned, if only briefly, to being her grandson. The studio fell into silence, overcome with emotion.
Meanwhile, another storyline unfolded with Shinji and Moon Won. Making their first joint appearance on the show, the couple revealed their newlywed home and shared glimpses of their everyday life ahead of marriage.
Moon Won, in particular, drew attention for his dedication, taking charge of cooking, housework, and health routines. His carefully prepared hot pot meal and surprise gestures for Shinji conveyed sincerity beyond words.
He also spoke candidly about the hardships they faced following public scrutiny, including a period when work opportunities dried up. To make ends meet, he revealed that he had taken on jobs at logistics centers and in cleaning services.
Rather than focusing on competition, this episode of “Fun-Staurant” centered on people. One reached out to the past, while another stepped toward the future. It began with laughter and ended in tears, capturing something unmistakably real in between.
