BTS turned Tokyo into a sea of “ARIRANG,” delivering a performance that transcended language and borders.
Held on April 17 and 18 at Tokyo Dome, the “BTS WORLD TOUR ‘ARIRANG’ IN TOKYO” concerts drew overwhelming attention even before opening. Both shows sold out, with a total of 110,000 attendees filling the venue across two nights. The concerts marked BTS’s return to Tokyo Dome after approximately seven years, following the 2019 “LOVE YOURSELF : SPEAK YOURSELF” tour.
The energy surged from the opening moments. As “Not Today” and “MIC Drop” rang out, the audience moved like a tidal wave, their synchronized light sticks transforming the venue into a single living entity. The performance quickly evolved beyond cheering into a complete musical exchange between artist and audience.
A defining moment came during “Body to Body” from the new album “ARIRANG.” When the melody of the traditional song “Arirang” emerged mid-performance, the audience instinctively joined in. Tens of thousands of voices merged into one, creating an emotional resonance that required no translation. It was more than a singalong, it was a shared cultural moment.
The atmosphere reached another peak with global hits “Butter” and “Dynamite.” Fans sang every lyric in unison, dissolving the boundary between stage and audience. The sound extended beyond the venue, becoming a massive collective chorus.
In a spontaneous “random song” segment, BTS offered a special gesture to Japanese fans. Performances of “Crystal Snow” and “FOR YOU” reignited long-held memories, while the members themselves remarked on how meaningful it was to perform the songs again.
Communication on stage carried equal weight. The members delivered most of their remarks in Japanese and even read prepared letters, expressing gratitude for the long wait. A simple “We missed you” bridged years of absence in an instant.
They also shared reflections on imagining daily life in Tokyo during their time away, conveying a deeper empathy for fans. The joy of returning and the sincerity of their gratitude were fully embedded in the performance.
Following the successful Tokyo concerts, BTS will continue the tour in the United States, with upcoming shows scheduled for April 25, 26, and 28 at Raymond James Stadium.
Above all, the concerts reaffirmed a timeless truth. Music transcends language, and through “ARIRANG,” that idea was powerfully realized once again.
