Iksan Baekje National Heritage Night Tour Opens April 24

뉴스컬처 2026-04-08 07:26:15 신고

The city of Iksan will host the “2026 Iksan Baekje National Heritage Night Tour” for three days starting April 24, offering a wide range of immersive experiences set against the illuminated remains of the Baekje royal palace.

Held under the theme “A Night at the Baekje Royal Palace Awakening Under Moonlight,” the event will take place across the Wanggung-ri Archaeological Site, a UNESCO World Heritage property.

Supported by the Korea Heritage Service, the Night Tour program is an annual cultural festival built around eight nighttime themes, including nightscape, night routes, and night history. Similar heritage night events are held nationwide in cities such as Suwon, Jeonju, Gangneung, and Gwangju. Iksan, however, has stood out for its planning and execution, earning the top honor from the Korea Heritage Service for three consecutive years.

Iksan developed into a key royal center during the reign of King Mu, the 30th ruler of Baekje, reinforcing its historical status as an ancient capital. The Wanggung-ri site, which serves as the main venue, is believed to have functioned as a palace complex. Archaeological remains such as sophisticated drainage systems, landscaped gardens, and precious metal workshop sites offer insight into the advanced urban planning and craftsmanship of the Baekje period.

Nearby lies the Mireuksa Temple Site, the largest ancient temple complex in Korea. Its stone pagoda, which illustrates the transition from wooden to stone pagoda construction, highlights the originality and high level of architectural achievement in Baekje culture.

This year’s program expands its historical experience offerings with more than ten newly introduced activities, including string art inspired by sacred reliquary ornaments. Key programs include the Moonlight Wish Ritual at the royal palace, treasure hunts, history quiz events, late-night stargazing tours, emotional tent experiences, palace walks, and pagoda-circling rituals, all designed to deepen visitor engagement.

Visitors will be able to step away from the bustle of daytime life and enjoy the calm, refreshing atmosphere of a spring night, where soft lighting enhances the quiet elegance of the historic palace grounds. The event is expected to provide both cultural relaxation and contribute to the revitalization of the local nighttime economy.

Advance registration is required through the official website by April 21. Some programs will be operated on a paid basis to enhance the quality of the experience, and on-site registration will be available only if spots remain.
