A 14-year-old boy’s death in Iksan has reentered the spotlight after a dramatic appellate reversal, reopening fundamental questions about who was truly responsible.
The April 4 broadcast of SBS investigative program Unanswered Questions revisits the stepchild death case, focusing on conflicting statements and newly surfaced evidence that challenge the original conviction.
The incident dates back to January 31, 2025. A man in his 40s rushed into an emergency room in Iksan carrying an unconscious child. Despite prolonged resuscitation efforts, the boy, identified as Kim Somang (pseudonym), did not survive.
Medical staff quickly noted multiple bruises and injuries inconsistent with an accident, prompting a police investigation. Authorities arrested the stepfather, who had lived with the boy for approximately eight years following his remarriage to the child’s mother.
During questioning, the stepfather admitted to using physical discipline and stated he lost control on the day of the incident. However, the autopsy revealed severe internal trauma, including organ rupture and hypovolemic shock, leading prosecutors to charge him with child abuse resulting in death. He was sentenced to 22 years in prison in the first trial.
The case shifted sharply on appeal.
A recorded conversation involving the boy’s older brother, Mideum (pseudonym), became central. In the recording, he stated, “I got angry, hit him, and stepped on him.” While he initially made similar statements to police, he later retracted them, claiming he had lied out of concern for his mother.
The appellate court placed significant weight on this initial confession and recording, acknowledging the possibility that the fatal act may have been committed by the older brother rather than the stepfather. The original ruling was subsequently overturned.
The stepfather now claims he confessed to protect the child, while the older brother’s repeated reversals have fueled questions about credibility. The case now stands at a critical juncture, with uncertainty surrounding who is telling the truth.
The program reconstructs the timeline using newly disclosed evidence, aiming to piece together the final moments leading to the boy’s death. As conflicting accounts collide, the search for the truth continues.
