What happens when someone who has never chased desire suddenly holds 150 billion won in her hands?
That question sits at the center of Gold Land, where Park Bo-young abandons her familiar warmth and steps into a far more dangerous emotional territory.
The series follows Kim Hee-joo, a customs officer who becomes entangled in a gold smuggling case and unexpectedly comes into possession of a massive fortune. What begins as survival quickly spirals into a fight driven by instinct, greed, and betrayal.
Park plays Hee-joo as a character in constant transformation. Hunted and cornered, she is forced to make increasingly risky decisions, eventually finding herself at the heart of a violent struggle over the gold.
To embody that shift, Park underwent noticeable physical changes, including weight loss, reinforcing the character’s psychological deterioration.
“Kim Hee-joo is someone who changes constantly,” she said. “I’ve often portrayed characters who endure with a smile, but this time I wanted to show a dry, worn-out face that is simply trying to survive. At some point, I realized I was becoming her.”
She added, “I pushed myself as far as I could for this role,” signaling a complete break from her previous image.
Director Kim Sung-hoon explained the intent behind the casting. “Park Bo-young feels like someone far removed from desire, which made her perfect for this story. I wanted to explore how ordinary desire grows and takes over.”
At its core, “Gold Land” asks a simple but unsettling question:
What would you do if survival and greed became the same thing?
