Director Park Cheol-hwan, known for his genre-driven works such as Grid and Blood Free, steps into feature filmmaking with The Ultimate Duo, marking his first full-length directorial effort.
Having built his career through hands-on experience across the industry, Park previously co-directed Grid, a Disney+ original series that explored a mystery surrounding a figure both revered as humanity’s savior and suspected as an accomplice to murder. He later directed Blood Free, a Hulu original also released via Disney+, blending science fiction with suspense-driven storytelling. Through these projects, he steadily established his command over genre narratives.
Set to premiere on April 2, The Ultimate Duo, distributed by Acemaker Movieworks, follows detective Jaehyuk, who has been reassigned to a remote post, as he faces what may be his final chance at redemption. Teaming up with rookie detective Jungho, he heads to Seoul to track down the true culprit behind a murder case involving two prime suspects.
Park explained, “The story was inspired by an actual case in Japan, and after encountering similar cases in Korea, I developed the idea around identifying the true perpetrator.” He added, “I wanted to create a crime investigation film that balances humor while sustaining the core mystery to the very end.”
Built on the compelling premise of “one case, two suspects,” the film unfolds through layered twists and relentless pursuit, persistently raising the question of who the real culprit is. Alongside this, the chemistry between a veteran detective and a rookie partner, combined with gripping suspense and impactful crime action, is expected to deliver a well-balanced genre experience.
Park further emphasized, “If Two Cops in the 1990s and Public Enemy in the 2000s laid the foundation for Korean investigative films, The Ultimate Duo aims to evolve the genre for audiences of the 2020s.”
