The King’s Warden (directed by Jang Hang-jun) has maintained its dominance at the Korean box office despite a wave of new releases, continuing its strong theatrical run. The film has now surpassed Frozen II to secure the No.6 spot on the all-time box office chart, with over 13.84 million admissions.
According to the Korean Film Council’s integrated ticketing system on March 19, the film drew 124,110 moviegoers on March 18, ranking No.1 for the day. Its cumulative audience has reached 13,846,269.
Set in Cheongnyeongpo in 1457, the story follows a village head who voluntarily chooses exile for the sake of his community, alongside a young dethroned king forced into exile. As the first Korean film to explore the hidden narrative of King Danjong, it has gained strong word of mouth, driven by standout performances from Yoo Hae-jin, Park Ji-hoon, Yoo Ji-tae, Jeon Mi-do, and Kim Min.
After surpassing 10 million admissions in just 31 days, the film has continued its upward trajectory, overtaking 12.12: The Day (13.12M), Avatar (13.33M), Veteran (13.41M), and Frozen II (13.76M). Industry attention is now focused on whether it can climb further up the all-time rankings.
Meanwhile, Project Hail Mary, starring Ryan Gosling, opened in second place with 76,003 admissions on its first day, bringing its total to 78,054. The film follows a scientist who wakes up alone on a spacecraft with no memory and must complete a mission to save humanity from extinction.
Method Acting, led by Lee Dong-hwi, debuted at No.3 with 8,269 admissions on its opening day, reaching a cumulative total of 11,857. The comedy centers on an actor desperate to shed his comedic image by immersing himself excessively into a serious role.
At No.4, Hoppers added 5,207 viewers, bringing its cumulative total to 553,025. The animated adventure follows a girl who becomes a robotic beaver and infiltrates an animal world filled with unexpected challenges.
Rounding out the top five, Bomb entered at No.5 with 3,783 admissions on its opening day, reaching a cumulative 5,155. The suspense thriller depicts a tense confrontation between a man predicting serial bomb attacks and a police investigation unit racing to stop him.
