The historical blockbuster The King's Warden continued its dominant run at the Korean box office, maintaining the No.1 position even on a weekday as it moves closer to another major milestone.
According to the Korean Film Council’s integrated ticketing system on March 17, the film drew 133,941 viewers on March 16, keeping its place atop the daily box office. Its cumulative admissions have now reached 13,601,732.
With the latest figures, The King's Warden has climbed to No.7 on Korea’s all-time box office chart and No.5 among Korean films, continuing its rapid ascent after surpassing the 10-million mark earlier in its run.
The film has already overtaken several major hits including 12.12: The Day (13.12 million), Avatar (13.33 million) and Veteran (13.41 million). It is now closing in on Frozen II (13.76 million) and Avengers: Endgame (13.97 million), both of which stand directly ahead on the all-time list.
Set in Cheongnyeongpo in 1457, the film tells the story of a village chief who voluntarily chooses exile in hopes of reviving his struggling community and encounters a young deposed king sent to the same remote place. As the first Korean film to explore a hidden narrative surrounding King Danjong, the production gained attention upon release, while the performances of Yoo Hae-jin, Park Ji-hoon, Yoo Ji-tae, Jeon Mi-do and Kim Min have fueled strong word of mouth.
Hoppers ranked second with 8,186 viewers, bringing its cumulative total to about 539,000 admissions. The animated adventure follows a girl named Mabel who becomes a robotic beaver through experimental “hopping” technology and embarks on an unexpected mission inside the animal world.
Samakdo came in third with 3,743 viewers, raising its cumulative audience to roughly 61,000.
Humint climbed to fourth place with 3,285 viewers, bringing its cumulative total to about 1.97 million admissions. Directed by Ryoo Seung-wan, the film follows individuals with different agendas colliding in the icy port city of Vladivostok.
The re-released Pride and Prejudice (2005) ranked fifth with 1,409 viewers, bringing its cumulative admissions to around 899,000.
