Actress Han Ji-eun has revealed a striking new stage transformation through the play THE WASP.
The production, which opened on March 10 at Sejong S Theater in Seoul, features Han Ji-eun as Heather, a character who appears to live a stable life on the surface while carrying deep emotional scars. Throughout the 90-minute performance, she leads the stage with tightly controlled emotions, sustaining the play’s tension and drawing the audience deeply into the unfolding psychological drama.
THE WASP is a two-hander centered on a conversation between two former classmates, Heather and Carla, who reunite after twenty years. The story explores memories of their school days, class divisions, and the trauma that shaped their lives, unfolding as a gripping psychological thriller. Originally premiered in 2015 at the Hampstead Theatre in London, the production has drawn additional attention as its first staging in Korea.
Within the play, Heather unsettles the reunion by presenting a dangerous proposal to her longtime friend Carla, whose life has taken a very different path. As their conversation unfolds, long-hidden incidents from the past gradually emerge, transforming the stage into a tense psychological battleground. Han Ji-eun heightens the intensity in the latter half of the play, portraying the character’s anxiety, anger, and tangled memories with meticulous detail.
Particularly notable is the way she maintains outward composure while subtly revealing the fractures forming beneath the surface. Small gestures such as removing her shoes, letting down her hair, or applying lipstick are woven into the character’s shifting psychological state, giving depth to Heather’s dual nature. Her precise control of dialogue pacing, breathing, and even the tremor of her fingertips draws the audience deeply into the character’s emotional arc.
Han Ji-eun has built a diverse career across genres, appearing in dramas Study Group and When the Stars Gossip, the film Hitman 2, and stage productions including Anna X and White Rabbit Red Rabbit. In this production, she steps away from her previously bright and lively image, taking on a darker psychological role that further expands her acting spectrum.
The play THE WASP will run at Sejong S Theater through April 26.
