The Korean historical drama The King's Warden continues its powerful run at the local box office even after surpassing the 10-million mark.
According to the Korean Film Council’s ticketing network on March 11, the film drew 177,195 viewers on March 10, bringing its cumulative total to 11,884,042 admissions.
Set in Cheongnyeongpo in 1457, the story follows a village chief who voluntarily chooses exile to revive his struggling village and a young dethroned king sent into banishment. Performances by Yoo Hae-jin, Park Ji-hoon, Yoo Ji-tae, Jeon Mi-do and Kim Min have driven strong word-of-mouth among audiences.
The film surpassed 10 million admissions in just 31 days and has already overtaken titles including Silmido, Avatar The Way of Water, Parasite, The Roundup Punishment and Train to Busan. With 11.88 million admissions, it is now expected to soon surpass Exhuma, which finished with 11.91 million viewers.
Hoppers held second place with 10,263 viewers, raising its cumulative total to 366,775 admissions.
The animated adventure follows Mabel, a girl transformed into a robotic beaver through “hopping” technology who infiltrates the animal world and embarks on an unexpected journey.
The espionage thriller HUMINT ranked third with 5,358 viewers, bringing its cumulative audience to 1,943,198 admissions. Directed by Ryoo Seung-wan, the film depicts a clash between characters with different agendas in the icy port city of Vladivostok.
Fourth place went to Mad Dance Office, which drew 4,297 viewers, followed by 5 Centimeters Per Second, which ranked fifth with 2,738 viewers.
