The historical drama The King's Warden, directed by Jang Hang-jun, extended its strong box office streak over the weekend, drawing 1.72 million viewers and pushing its cumulative total beyond 11.5 million admissions.
According to the Korean Film Council’s integrated ticketing system on March 9, the film attracted 699,474 moviegoers on March 8 alone, bringing its total audience to 11,503,745.
Set in Cheongnyeongpo in 1457, the film tells the story of a village chief who voluntarily chooses exile to revive his struggling community and a young dethroned king who has been banished from the throne. As the first Korean film to explore a lesser-known story surrounding King Danjong, the production quickly gained attention upon release.
Performances by Yoo Hae-jin, Park Ji-hoon, Yoo Ji-tae, Jeon Mi-do and Kim Min have further fueled word-of-mouth momentum, helping the film maintain strong ticket sales even after surpassing the 10-million admissions milestone.
With its latest achievement, The King's Warden has become the fourth historical drama in Korean cinema to enter the prestigious 10-million admissions club, following The King and the Clown, Masquerade and The Admiral Roaring Currents.
Among the 34 Korean films that have crossed the milestone, it has already surpassed the totals of Silmido (11.08 million), Avatar The Way of Water (10.82 million), The Roundup No Way Out (10.68 million) and Parasite (10.31 million).
The film’s box office pace has also outperformed several recent hits. It reached the 11-million mark faster than Exhuma, 12.12 The Day and Masquerade, underscoring the strength of its theatrical momentum.
Disney and Pixar’s animated adventure Hoppers held second place with 105,981 viewers for the day, bringing its cumulative total to 315,184.
The film follows Mabel, a girl who becomes a robotic beaver through a technology known as “hopping,” as she infiltrates the animal world and embarks on an unexpected adventure.
In third place was Humint, which drew 15,497 viewers and lifted its cumulative audience to 1,932,209.
Directed by Ryoo Seung-wan, known for Escape from Mogadishu, Smugglers and the Veteran series, the spy thriller is set in Vladivostok where secrets and truths disappear beneath icy waters. The film stars Jo In-sung, Park Jung-min, Shin Se-kyung and Park Hae-joon.
Fourth place went to Choir of God, which added 5,719 viewers for a cumulative total of 1,420,638 admissions.
Mad Dance Office, starring Yum Hye-ran and Choi Sung-eun, ranked fifth with 4,898 viewers, bringing its cumulative audience to 26,973.
The continued momentum of The King's Warden suggests the historical drama could extend its record-breaking run further in the coming weeks.
