적도기니에서 온 유학생 온유(24·본명 Vicent Creux) 씨를 두고 나오는 말이다.

방송에서 보여준 유창한 한국어 구사 능력과 구성진 트로트 창법이 그를 한국 사회에서 주목받는 아프리카 청년으로 만들었다.

낯선 땅에서 보내온 그의 시간들이 궁금해 쫓아가 봤다.

설 연휴 첫날인 지난달 14일 귀성객들로 붐비던 서울 강남고속버스터미널의 한 커피숍에서 그를 만났다. 인스타그램에 올릴 영상을 찍기 위해 상경한 일정에 맞춰 인터뷰가 이뤄졌다.

한국과 인연을 맺은 계기를 먼저 물으니 코로나19를 꼽았다.

애초 중국 유학을 준비했는데, 입국이 어려워지면서 한국으로 방향을 틀었다고 했다.

트로트 곡 '막걸리 한잔'을 불러 특유의 구수한 음색과 화려한 몸동작으로 관객의 큰 호응을 얻었다.

이른바 '칠곡 할머니 래퍼'들과 사흘을 함께 지낸 시간이었다.

어린 시절 할머니와 함께 보낸 기억이 없다는 그는 촬영 내내 자신을 손자처럼 대해준 할머니들에게 눈물이 날 정도로 고마운 감정을 느꼈다고 말했다.

온유 씨는 이복형제가 21명인 대가족에서 자랐다고 했다.

어머니는 현재 스페인에 살고 있고 아버지는 프랑스에 거주 중이다.

This is how people describe Onyou (24), an international student from Equatorial Guinea, whose real name is Vicent Creux.

His fluent Korean and rich, emotional renditions of trot songs as seen on television have made him a widely recognized African in Korean society.

Curious about his life in this foreign land, we looked into his story.

We met him at a coffee shop inside Seoul's Gangnam Express Bus Terminal on Feb. 14, the first day of the Lunar New Year holiday, when the terminal was crowded with travelers heading to their hometowns. The interview was arranged to fit his schedule of filming content for his Instagram page.

When asked what first connected him to Korea, he pointed to COVID-19. He had originally planned to study in China, but as entry became difficult due to the pandemic, he turned his attention to Korea instead.

He began his life as a student in Korea in 2021 by enrolling in a Korean language program at Konyang University's Nonsan Glocal Campus at the height of the pandemic.

Though the environment was unfamiliar, he adapted quickly. After hearing this, he came to accept that the looks directed at him were curiosity rather than prejudice, and his life in Korea grew brighter.

Among the many African students studying in Korea, the moment he began to receive the spotlight came in March 2024, when he appeared on KBS' "National Singing Contest" in Busan.

Singing the trot song "A Glass of Makgeolli," he won enthusiastic applause from the audience with his distinctive, hearty voice and dynamic gestures.

When asked about his most memorable experience in Korea, he said working on a content production project in Chilgok, North Gyeongsang Province, where he spent three days with "Chilgok grandmother rappers."

Having grown up without memories of spending time with his own grandmother, he said he was deeply moved -- almost to the point of tears -- by the grandmothers who treated him like their grandson throughout the filming.

He grew up in a large family with 21 half-siblings. His mother now lives in Spain, and his father in France.

"My father believed that all children must receive at least a basic education. That value made me who I am today," he said.

Originally preparing to study in a science and engineering field, his decision to major in international development cooperation in Korea is closely connected to the reality of his home country.

Equatorial Guinea, an oil-producing nation of about 1.7 million people, is rich in resources, yet the lives of many of its citizens are still not affluent.

He described Korea as "a senior country."

"You became a developed country after experiencing colonial rule and war. We have many things to learn from you."

After completing his master's degree at Busan University of Foreign Studies, his dream is to become a proud member of the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and work in the field of development cooperation linking Korea and Africa.

However, he noted that regular recruitment is limited to Korean nationals, which is a realistic barrier. He also considered naturalization, but Equatorial Guinea does not legally allow its citizens to acquire another nationality.

His hope for Korean society is simple.

"Africa is not only what you see on the news. I hope people will look at its diverse sides."

Asked to describe himself in one sentence, he answered firmly: "I am a person who keeps challenging himself."
