SBS current affairs program “Unanswered Questions” delves into the mysterious death of a four-month-old infant. The production team obtained medical records, investigative documents, and extensive home-camera footage to reconstruct the circumstances from multiple angles.
On October 22 last year at approximately 12:30 p.m., an emergency call was placed to 119. The mother reported that while preparing to bathe the baby and stepping away briefly, the child appeared to have submerged in water. When paramedics arrived, the infant was in critical condition and was immediately transported to a hospital.
However, medical staff and first responders reportedly detected signs that were difficult to attribute to a simple drowning accident. Injuries appearing to have occurred at different times were found on various parts of the body, and detailed examinations revealed internal bleeding and fractures. The child was transferred to a tertiary hospital but ultimately passed away. The autopsy determined the cause of death to be hemorrhagic shock and organ failure resulting from multiple traumatic injuries.
The mother, who was present at the time of the incident, has firmly denied allegations of abuse. She claimed she had only stepped away briefly, and that bruises may have formed during the rescue process. The father, who was not at home at the time, also denied any wrongdoing and submitted home-camera footage showing the baby falling from a bed several days prior, suggesting a previous fall may have caused the brain injury.
Investigators secured approximately ten days’ worth of footage from home cameras installed in the residence, amounting to thousands of files. Although the bathroom itself was not captured on video, footage from inside the room and recorded audio were preserved. The prosecutor in charge stated that certain scenes included “elements difficult to regard as part of a typical caregiving environment.”
What truly happened to the infant? “Unanswered Questions” will examine the connection between the alleged accident and the injuries, as well as the meaning of the records left behind in the home-camera footage. The episode airs on February 28.
