The Lunar New Year holiday box office battle has officially begun, with five Korean films securing positions across the top rankings.
According to the Korean Film Council’s integrated ticketing network on Feb. 14, The King's Warden drew 133,577 moviegoers on Feb. 13 alone, maintaining its No. 1 position. Its cumulative audience has now reached 1,499,475.
Set in Cheongnyeongpo in 1457, The King's Warden tells the story of a village head who voluntarily chooses exile for the sake of his village’s prosperity and a young former king who was forced into exile after losing his throne. Directed by acclaimed storyteller Jang Hang-jun, the film features a powerful ensemble cast including Yoo Hae-jin, Park Ji-hoon, Yoo Ji-tae, Jeon Mi-do, and Kim Min.
Humint ranked second, drawing 91,922 viewers in a single day and bringing its cumulative total to 304,733.
Set against the frozen seas of Vladivostok, where secrets and truths alike are submerged beneath icy waters, Humint follows characters with conflicting objectives as they collide. Directed by Ryoo Seung-wan, known for Mogadishu, Smugglers, and the Veteran series, the film stars Zo In-sung, Park Jung-min, Shin Se-kyung, and Park Hae-jun.
Number One ranked third, drawing 13,978 viewers for a cumulative total of 65,227.
The film follows Ha-min, played by Choi Woo-shik, who begins to see numbers decreasing whenever he eats food prepared by his mother. When the number reaches zero, he learns his mother, Eun-sil, portrayed by Jang Hye-jin, will die. Determined to prevent that fate, he fights to save her.
Choir of God placed fourth, drawing 8,981 viewers for a cumulative audience of 1,168,519.
The film tells the story of a fake praise troupe formed in North Korea for foreign currency earnings, unfolding a layered narrative of deception and survival.
Once We Were Us ranked fifth, drawing 8,177 viewers and reaching a cumulative audience of 2,528,894.
The film follows Eun-ho, played by Koo Kyo-hwan, and Jung-won, portrayed by Moon Ga-young, who reunite by chance after ten years and revisit the lingering traces of their past love.
